About

Steele Roofing is a family owned roofing contractor at 20841 US Highway 69 South in Tyler, Texas 75703, which places it in Smith County (Tyler is the Smith County seat and the 75703 ZIP covers south Tyler). Better Business Bureau records list John Steele as owner and Natalie Steele as office manager, date the business to 2014, and show it as a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating, accredited since November 2017. The company works across East Texas, listing Tyler, Bullard, Whitehouse, Flint, Chandler, Troup, Lindale, Mineola, Canton, Athens, Longview, Kilgore and Sulphur Springs on its service area pages. Both residential and commercial work is handled, including multi family projects, flat commercial roofs, TPO, commercial roof coatings and standing seam metal, alongside conventional shingle replacement and repair. The pitch is consultative rather than hard sell: free roof inspections, a walkthrough of the insurance claim process after storm damage, and emergency tarping when a roof is opened up by hail, wind or a fallen tree. East Texas takes regular hail and wind, and the company puts particular emphasis on impact resistant shingles for that reason. Its website displays CertainTeed Saint Gobain and Malarkey product badges and a Tyler area builder association mark. Those are shown by the company and we were not able to confirm the CertainTeed credential on CertainTeed's own contractor directory, so they are best treated as stated by the company until confirmed.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #03-0455 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

Great roofing company! Very knowledgeable with a “can do” attitude. Always on time. Handled insurance company with any questions or issues. They changed out the roof. Took care of gutters. Also handled our patio awning that had hail damage. Most importantly they are honest folks to deal with.

Steele Roofing has been fantastic to work with! They kept us in the loop and informed about insurance and weather. The crew was great to work with and did a wonderful job! They also did a great job with cleanup. Highly recommend working with them for all roofing needs.

I reached out to Steele Roofing for a minor repair after some shingles delaminated and blew off. Knowing they are one of the top RCAT-licensed companies in the Tyler area, I expected good service, but I was blown away when they came out the exact same day I called! Carter arrived promptly, was incredibly helpful, and completed the repairs quickly. He even performed a thorough, full-roof inspection while onsite. I will absolutely use them for any future roofing needs and highly recommend them to my friends and neighbors.

I had some wind damage from the storms 2 weeks ago. After contacting Steele, a young man named Carter was sent out to estimate the needed repairs. This man is a tremendous ambassador for Steele. Not only did the repairs, but sat down with me, showed me several items on my roof that he saw outside of what he had first noted in the inspection, and made the corrections on the spot. No charge, just exemplary service to the customer. I had questions, he had honest answers. He is one you can trust to not only do the job assigned, but to have those eyes open and alert to spot other deficiencies and get them addressed, too. That's how you get lifetime customers right there, and because of Carter, Steele has a new one on their hands. They saw what this young man was all about and gave him a chance to shine and help continue to grow the reputation of Steele Roofing as a reputable, and customer-focused company. Great job all of the way. In about 8-10 years, Steele will be pulling this roof off and replacing it in full, simply because of this fantastic experience. It's a dying practice, folks, and you all know it. You can be rest assured that Steele Roofing is at the top of their craft, and other roofers might as well fold up shop and call it a day. Thank you so much, Carter, Natalie, and the team at Steele Roofing.

We had an excellent experience with Steele Roofing from start to finish. The entire team was professional, knowledgeable, and responsive throughout the process. They took the time to explain our options, answered all of our questions, and kept us informed every step of the way. The installation of our new roof was completed on schedule, and the workmanship was outstanding. The crew was punctual, respectful of our property, and did a thorough cleanup once the job was finished. The quality of the materials and attention to detail truly stand out. It’s clear that Steele Roofing takes pride in their work and customer satisfaction. Our new roof looks fantastic, and we feel confident knowing it was done right. We highly recommend Steele Roofing to anyone needing a reliable, honest, and professional roofing company.

Frequently asked

Which county is Steele Roofing in?
Smith County. The company's address, 20841 US Highway 69 South, Tyler, TX 75703, sits in Smith County, of which Tyler is the county seat.
Is there a state roofing licence in Texas?
No. Texas issues no state roofing licence. Instead of a state number, ask for a current certificate of general liability and workers compensation insurance sent straight from the insurer, and check any manufacturer certification on the manufacturer's own directory.
What is the difference between RCAT membership and an RCAT licence?
The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas runs two separate things. Membership means the company pays dues and appears in the directory. The Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned separately through examination and continuing education. They should never be described as the same thing.
How much of a problem is hail in East Texas?
Enough that most full roof replacements around Tyler follow a storm rather than simple wear. East Texas gets hail, straight line winds and falling limbs, and insurance claim work is a normal part of roofing here.
Are impact resistant shingles worth the extra cost around Tyler?
Class 4 shingles, the top rating in the UL 2218 impact test, resist hail bruising better than standard shingles and many Texas insurers give a premium discount for them. Ask your carrier what the discount is before you decide, then compare it against the price difference.
Do I need a permit for a reroof in Tyler?
Texas has no statewide building code enforcement, so requirements are set locally. Inside Tyler city limits a roofing permit is normally required. On an address outside the city limits in unincorporated Smith County the rules differ. Ask the contractor to confirm and to pull whatever is needed.
What does emergency tarping actually do?
It is a temporary cover over an opening so water stops entering while the claim and the repair are arranged. It is not a repair and it should not be billed as one, but it protects the interior and it protects your claim by preventing further damage.
Can a roofer pay my insurance deductible for me?
No. Texas law prohibits a contractor from paying, waiving, rebating or absorbing your insurance deductible. Anyone offering it is proposing something the law does not allow.
What should I get in writing before signing?
Shingle brand, line and colour, underlayment, ice and water shield at valleys and penetrations, the ventilation plan, decking replacement price per sheet, who pulls the permit, the cleanup including a magnet sweep, the payment schedule, and both the manufacturer warranty and the workmanship warranty in years.
How do I check a roofer's manufacturer certification?
Look the company up on the manufacturer's own contractor directory, not on the roofer's website. A logo on a website is a claim. A listing on the GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed directory is confirmation.
