Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this listing yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

Saul and his team are the hardest working people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. They arrived around 6:30am and finished around 7:45 pm. Everything was cleaned up to perfection. You wouldn’t have know they were there, unless you look up and see my new roof! The workers were all so kind and polite.

Modern Roofing went above and beyond to help us get our new roof! They helped us navigate the “Appraisal” process on our insurance policy (which I never knew existed until they pointed it out) because the insurance company refused to replace the whole roof even though it was clear the whole roof was damaged. Layne’s customer service, knowledge, attention to detail, determination, and patience during this almost 8 month ordeal with insurance was invaluable to us. We would have had to accept a partial payment from the insurance company on our claim because we didn’t think we had any other option. The crew installed our new roof yesterday and we are so pleased with how it turned out. Saul, the project manager, communicated well with us for scheduling and answering other questions. The whole team was meticulous in the cleanup process too. It looked like they had never even been here when they left - except of course for the wonderful new roof! Thank you to the whole group at Modern Roofing! Great job!

Layne Clark from Modern Roofing has proven to be an invaluable professional. During his review of my neighborhood, he promptly identified roofs damaged by last year's hail storm. Trusting his expertise, I authorized a detailed inspection of my roof. Initially, I was hesitant, but the process quickly proved to be smooth and efficient. Mr. Clark uncovered severe hail damage and provided a comprehensive report. I then coordinated with my insurance company, which sent an appraiser directly to assess the damage. Mr. Clark met with the appraiser, documented the findings, and maintained follow-up communication. The outcome was clear: my roof required replacement. Every step was handled flawlessly by his very professional team—from the initial assessment to the final installation. Premium materials were used, and I was kept fully informed throughout, including transparency about my out-of-pocket costs. The finished roof exceeded my expectations and was completed within the promised three days, thanks to the size of my roof. All work was done as scheduled, with proper shielding, and all debris, including nails, was thoroughly removed. A detailed perimeter inspection confirmed no residual roofing debris. I am highly satisfied with the results, professionalism of the entire Modern Roofing team, and execution of the project. Modern Roofing is an exceptionally professional outfit, and I strongly recommend their services for anyone in need of roof repair or replacement.

Zach and team at Modern Roofing were great to work with. Zach was visiting a current project next to us and without question came and checked out our preexisting ventilation issue. He came up with a solution to our issue and at a competitive price. We had great communication and understating as to when the installation would occur, they installed the intake and exhaust vents, cleaned up the space and were done within a few hours. I would highly recommend Modern Roofing for any of your roofing needs.

Very professional. We thought we were only going to be able to fix the part of our roof that was damaged but he pointed out that they paid enough for a whole roof so we have a brand new roof with better shingles. They did it in one day! It was awesome work. We are very happy and I would recommend them to everyone!

Frequently asked

Does Modern Roofing & Restoration hold a Texas state roofing licence?
There is no such thing. Texas does not license roofing contractors at state level, unlike many other states. What you can verify instead is current general liability and workers compensation insurance, obtained directly from the insurance agent, RCAT standing, BBB accreditation, and any registration the City of Tyler or Smith County requires for your specific address.
What does RCAT Member mean, and is it the same as an RCAT licence?
They are two different things and should never be treated as interchangeable. RCAT, the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas, has plain Membership for companies that pay dues and join, and a separately earned Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) that requires testing and documented experience. The RCAT directory shows Modern Roofing & Restoration as a Member.
Is Tyler in Hail Alley, and should I be buying impact-resistant shingles?
East Texas including Smith County gets regular severe thunderstorms with hail, though the heaviest hail frequency in the state sits further west along the Interstate 35 corridor. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are the top grade in the UL 2218 impact test and most Texas insurers offer a premium credit for them. Ring your carrier, get the exact annual discount for your policy, then weigh that against the upgrade cost.
Do I need a WPI-8 certificate for a roof in Tyler?
No. WPI-8 windstorm certificates are a Texas Windstorm Insurance Association requirement for the 14 first-tier Gulf Coast counties. Smith County is roughly 200 miles inland and is nowhere near that zone, so WPI-8 has no application to a roof in Tyler. Any contractor raising it for an East Texas property is either confused or applying coastal language where it does not belong.
Who issues the roofing permit in Tyler and Smith County?
Texas has no statewide building code enforcement, so this is decided locally. Inside Tyler city limits the city building department handles permitting and inspection. Addresses with a Tyler mailing address that sit in unincorporated Smith County, or in nearby towns such as Whitehouse, Bullard or Lindale, follow different rules. Confirm the jurisdiction for your parcel and get it written into the contract who is responsible for pulling the permit.
Does this company hold a GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed certification?
No manufacturer certification for this company was found on GAF's, Owens Corning's or CertainTeed's own contractor directories. That does not mean the company installs those products badly, and it does install asphalt, designer, metal, tile and slate roofing. It does mean that if you want a manufacturer-backed enhanced system warranty, you should ask directly which manufacturer programmes the company is enrolled in and ask to see it on the manufacturer's own site.
How long has Modern Roofing & Restoration been operating?
The Better Business Bureau records the business as starting on 1 February 2022 and incorporating on 10 February 2022. BBB accreditation followed in August 2022 and RCAT membership in 2024. So it has been trading for roughly four years as of 2026, which is enough time to build a verifiable local track record you can check through references and its BBB and Chamber listings.
What is the difference between roof repair and full replacement after a hail storm?
Repair makes sense when damage is localised, the roof still has meaningful life left, and matching material is available. Replacement becomes the right call when hail bruising is spread across multiple slopes, when the shingles are near end of life, or when partial repair would leave a visible mismatch that your insurer will not accept. A proper inspection should include documented photographs per slope and a test square, not a walk around the garden.
How does the insurance claim process work for storm damage in East Texas?
You report the loss to your carrier, an adjuster inspects, and the carrier issues a scope and estimate. A contractor can attend that inspection, document damage and supply their own scope, which often catches items the adjuster missed. What a contractor cannot legally do in Texas is negotiate the claim for you without a public adjuster licence. And under Texas law a contractor may not waive, rebate or pay your deductible, so refuse any offer that includes it.
What should I ask any Tyler roofer before signing?
Request current general liability and workers compensation certificates sent to you by the insurer directly. Ask whether crews are employed or subcontracted and who carries their cover. Make the quote specify underlayment, ice and water shield at valleys, ventilation, flashing and drip edge, not just a shingle name. Get the workmanship warranty in writing with its term and exclusions. Confirm who pulls the permit. And never sign an assignment of your insurance benefits.
