About
American Roofing & Metal is a family owned San Antonio roofing and sheet metal contractor. The company's own website states it was founded in 1904 by Henry Spalten and has stayed in the Spalten family for five generations, growing from a small tinsmith shop into a full service roofing and sheet metal fabrication business. A Better Business Bureau filing lists a separate corporate start date of 1968, which likely reflects when the business was formally incorporated rather than when the trade began.
The company offers new construction roofing, reroofing, maintenance and repair, lightning protection systems, metal roofing, and in house sheet metal fabrication, for both residential clients and a wide range of commercial and institutional buildings including retail, medical, educational, government, and industrial properties. GAF's contractor locator lists American Roofing & Metal as a GAF GoldElite Commercial Contractor.
American Roofing & Metal has been an RCAT Member since 2017. It is based at 801 Wyoming Street in San Antonio and states it takes on projects across Texas, nationwide, and internationally.

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

City/county registration
Required in San Antonio Check the registry ↗Home Improvement Contractor Registration / Contractor Connect Program. Registration is required here to pull a roofing permit; we have not confirmed this company's own status, so check it before you sign.

RCAT member ID324 (member since 2017)
Licence boardRCAT, Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (Texas issues no state roofing licence; RCAT runs the licensing programme)
Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

I went in this store when it first opened years ago and it was frumpy, dirty, and disorganized. On July 3rd it was very clean, organized, and well stocked. Got a great deal on July 4th party decorations.

Great Company. Not the lowest price, however you get what you pay for.
Is American Roofing & Metal licensed by the State of Texas?
Texas has no statewide roofing license, so no company, including American Roofing & Metal, can be state licensed. The company is listed as an RCAT Member, and homeowners should verify current liability insurance directly, since RCAT status alone does not confirm insurance.
Is American Roofing & Metal an RCAT Member or an RCAT Licensed Roofing Contractor?
RCAT's directory lists American Roofing & Metal as a plain Member (since 2017), meaning the company pays dues to belong to the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas. This is different from the separately earned Licensed Roofing Contractor (CRRL/RRL/CRL) credential.

Texas has no statewide building code, so permitting and inspection rules are set city by city. Homeowners should confirm directly with the company and the City of San Antonio whether a permit is required for a given job.

Ask for proof of current liability insurance, a written scope of work, warranty terms for both labor and materials, and a project timeline before signing with American Roofing & Metal or any Texas roofer.

No. The company's website lists residential roofing alongside commercial work spanning retail, medical, educational, government, and industrial buildings, plus sheet metal fabrication.
