Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #03-0290 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

I would highly recommend Top Source contracing. As a business owner myself I understand the importance of quality craftsmanship and dependability, John was not short on either. He was very knowledgeable and had an answer for all the hard questions while walking us through the entire process. His crew worked their tail off and had the roof done before the day was over. Roof looks great, thanks again John!

Excellent experience from start to finish. Working with Top Source was incredibly easy and stress-free. They were quick to respond, quick to schedule, and quick to get the job done—without cutting any corners. John, the owner, took amazing care of us throughout the entire process. His communication was clear, concise, and honest, which made everything feel smooth and straightforward. The crew was professional, efficient, and left the property spotless. It’s rare to find a company that delivers both quality work and exceptional service, but they absolutely did. Highly recommend!

Top Source did an excellent job on my roof. Unlike a previous roofer, John took the time to explain everything in detail and made sure I understood how the whole process would work. His team was professional, efficient, and completed my roof in just one day. The quality of work was great, and the experience was stress-free. Despite a setback with the insurance company and mortgage lender, John had the most patience and reassured us that everything would be fine. I would highly recommend Top Source to anyone needing roof repair or replacement.

We recently had our roof replaced by Top Source. John Mitchell, the owner, was amazing throughout the entire process, including the inspection, meeting with the adjuster, working with the insurance company and replacing the roof. I really appreciate how patient and helpful he was when we were choosing our new roof. The roofing crew was fabulous. They were very careful and efficient. They did a wonderful job! The roof looks great! They also did an excellent job with the clean up. I highly recommend Top Source and I would definitely use them again.

Roof removal and installment of the new roof was done with the greatest of care. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. All guarantees and workmanship was put into writing, everything was professionally done . The installer worked with the adjuster to do the roof inspection so that everything was done professionally and thoroughly. The installer had no problems working with the insurance company. All the work was done in a timely manner.

Frequently asked

How do I know I have the right Top Source? The name is generic.
Match on all three of domain, address and phone. This company is topsourcetx.com, 9500 Ray White Rd Suite 200, Fort Worth TX 76244, phone (817) 832-7088, with John P. Mitchell as owner. Its RCAT and BBB records agree on all of those.
Is Top Source licensed by the State of Texas?
Texas does not issue a state roofing licence to anyone. The credential this company holds is the RCAT Licensed Roofing Contractor credential, recorded for John Mitchell as Commercial & Residential Roofing License #03-0290.
What does CRRL mean next to the owner's name?
CRRL is the combined Commercial and Residential Roofing License from the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas, the broadest of RCAT's three licence types alongside residential only (RRL) and commercial only (CRL). It is separately earned and is not the same as plain RCAT membership.
Why is hail the main roofing issue in Tarrant County?
Fort Worth and the wider DFW area sit in the North Texas hail belt, where spring storms regularly produce hail large enough to bruise shingles and shorten roof life. Much of the replacement work in the county starts as a storm claim rather than a planned re-roof.
Should I choose Class 4 impact resistant shingles?
Class 4 is the top rating in the UL 2218 steel ball impact test and resists hail bruising better than standard architectural shingles. Several Texas insurers discount premiums for a Class 4 roof, so ask your carrier what the discount would be before deciding whether the upgrade pays for itself.
Is metal roofing a good answer to hail?
Metal handles impact well and lasts a long time, but it can still dent cosmetically from large hail without losing waterproofing. Ask specifically how the contractor and your insurer each treat cosmetic denting, because some policies exclude it.
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Fort Worth?
Texas has no statewide building code administration, so permitting is handled locally. The City of Fort Worth and the surrounding Tarrant County municipalities each set their own requirements. Confirm the contractor pulls the permit rather than asking you to.
How should I verify a roofer's insurance?
Ask for a certificate of insurance covering both general liability and workers compensation, and have the insurance agent send it to you directly. Confirm the policy period covers your project dates, not just the day you asked.
What should I ask before signing a roofing contract?
Ask who pulls the permit, whether crews are employees or subcontractors, how rotten decking is priced per sheet, what the manufacturer warranty covers versus the workmanship warranty, and what happens if the insurance scope is revised part way through.
Does WPI-8 windstorm certification apply in Fort Worth?
No. WPI-8 certification through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association applies only to the 14 first tier Gulf Coast counties. Tarrant County is inland, so hail resistance, ventilation, decking condition and local permitting are the relevant considerations.
