About

Southwest Metal Roofing Systems is a residential metal roofing specialist operating from 11919 Rail Drive, Suite 1, in northeast San Antonio, Bexar County. The company trades under the line 'Do It Once, Do It For Life' and states on its own site that it has been in business more than 25 years and describes itself as the largest residential metal roofing contractor in South and Central Texas. Its Better Business Bureau record shows accreditation running back to 1 November 1998 with an A rating, and lists Daniel Boes as president. The product range is narrow by design. The company installs Galvalume Plus standing seam, painted standing seam in 24 gauge with a Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000 finish, and stone coated steel in tile and shake profiles. That is a deliberate metal only focus rather than a general roofing offer, and the pitch is longevity: a system meant to be the last roof a house needs rather than the cheapest replacement cycle. The company publishes a colour chart, a before and after gallery and a roofing terminology page, which is useful if you are comparing metal systems for the first time. Coverage runs across South and Central Texas from San Antonio out to New Braunfels, Schertz, Seguin, San Marcos, Boerne, Bandera, Helotes, Comfort, Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Canyon Lake, Wimberley, Dripping Springs and Bastrop. The company's own site displays Better Business Bureau, Energy Star, UL and Greater San Antonio Builders Association marks, and its About page states membership of the Greater San Antonio Builders Association, the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. The BBB accreditation is confirmed on bbb.org; the Energy Star and UL marks relate to product and system ratings rather than to a contractor certification, and the association memberships are stated by the company.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this listing yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

Southwest Metal Roofing systems installed a metal roofing system on our property. The team was courtesy and professional. Other than weather delays the crew stayed on schedule. The team was confident and masters of the craft. Demonstrated a commitment to excellence. We absolutely love the color and constantly get compliments from passengers by! They provided the most competitive pricing of everyone in the region.

SW Metal Roofing just completed a repair on our 15-year-old metal roof. They were professional, communicated with detail and promptness, were thorough, skilled, and so nice! The price was reasonable, too. Do not hesitate to hire them.

Southwest Metal Roofing Systems made switching to a metal roof easy. They handled the permits, teardown, new roof, and cleanup. Great quality work, and only took a few days Pricewise, I got four quotes for a standing seam metal roof, and SwMRS was one of the few that gave us an honest and competitive quote upfront. Not the most expensive, & not the least expensive (but close), & you knew it would be done right. Big shout-out to Dan, Rex, and the whole crew Enjoying our new Mansard Brown metal roof

I have used Southwest Metal Roofing three times on three homes over a course of 10+ years. All three times I have been impressed with their product and installation. Quality work is superior, clean up is excellent and customer service outstanding. I will use no one else.

I cannot thank Southwest Metal Roofing for their help, patience, cooperation, and compassion regarding the transfer of the roof’s warranty from my name to the new homeowners after recently selling my house. I also want to take a minute to thank them again for the roof itself. I loved, loved, loved that roof and couldn’t help but feel so damn proud of it every time I drove into my driveway and saw it. I mean, every time! And while I knew it would help decrease our utility bill, I didn’t know exactly how dramatic of a change it would be. Thanks to Southwest Metal Roofing, I believe my average CPS Energy invoice was in the neighborhood of $150 a month — for a two story, almost 2,500 square foot house. Un. Be. Lieve. A. Ble. The day the new homeowners had the inspection scheduled just happened to be the day our neighborhood was hit with a storm that produced massive hail. My kids and I were nearby and driving in it, as it produced pieces of ice falling from the sky that were literally the size of my fist. They sounded like indescribable explosions hitting my car (we were thankfully able to take shelter under the very last available spot at the local Sonic). My realtor informed me that everyone at the house that morning did, in fact, also suffer the hail’s effects. But when it was all over done, and the inspector looked at our roof again, he turned to the buyers and their realtor emphasizing that we had “a damn good roof!” I don’t doubt I’ll be calling them again when I need roof estimates at any future home I move into. I not only had people stop by the house to compliment my roof and ask who did it, but any time anyone needed a recommendation I enthusiastically threw their name out there. I’ll always be proud to have crossed paths with them, and feel lucky to have done business with Southwest Metal Roofing. They should just be glad I don’t create their public relations or marketing campaigns. My brain would be stuck on the one word everyone’s seemed to use to describe and compliment my roof .... dayyyummmm .... “The best damn roof you’ll ever own!” Lol It’s been a pleasure to do business with them.

Frequently asked

Does Texas issue a state roofing licence?
No. Texas has no state roofing licence and no state roofing regulator, so no San Antonio roofer is licensed by the state to install a roof. What you can verify is insurance, permitting through the City of San Antonio or Bexar County depending on where the property sits, voluntary industry standing such as RCAT membership and BBB accreditation, and manufacturer certification. A Texas roofer advertising a state licence is describing something that does not exist.
What does RCAT Member mean here, and what does it not mean?
The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas runs two separate things. Southwest Metal Roofing Systems holds RCAT membership, which means the company pays dues and appears in the association's directory. It is not the same as RCAT's separately earned Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (RRL, CRL or CRRL), which is held by a named individual after examination and continuing requirements. Membership is a real signal of industry participation, but it is not a licence and it is not the licensed credential.
Is San Antonio in a hail risk area?
Yes. Bexar County sits on the southern reach of the Texas hail corridor and takes damaging hail regularly, most notably in spring. San Antonio has had multiple billion dollar hail events, and hail is the single most common cause of roof insurance claims in the region. It is the main reason impact resistance and long term system durability are worth paying for here, rather than replacing an asphalt roof every time a storm passes through.
How does a metal roof handle Texas hail?
Metal generally does not fail structurally in hail the way asphalt does. It dents. That is a real difference: a dented metal panel usually still keeps water out, whereas a bruised asphalt shingle has lost granules and is quietly ageing faster. The catch is that many policies treat cosmetic denting differently from functional damage, and some carriers apply a cosmetic damage exclusion or endorsement on metal roofs. Ask your insurer how your policy handles metal denting before you buy.
What is a Class 4 impact rating and does metal qualify?
Class 4 is the top rating under the UL 2218 or FM 4473 steel ball impact tests, and many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof. Many metal roofing systems carry a Class 4 rating, but the rating belongs to the specific product and gauge, not to metal as a category. Ask for the product name and the test documentation, then take that to your insurer, because the discount depends on the carrier accepting that exact rating.
What does the Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000 finish actually do?
Those are PVDF resin based coating systems, the higher durability class for architectural metal, as opposed to the cheaper polyester and silicone modified polyester finishes. In practical Texas terms they hold their colour and resist chalking under intense ultraviolet exposure far longer, which is the difference between a metal roof that still looks right after twenty years and one that has faded unevenly. Southwest Metal Roofing Systems specifies 24 gauge painted standing seam in these finishes.
Do I need a permit to reroof in San Antonio?
Texas has no statewide building code enforcement, so this is local. Roof replacement inside San Antonio city limits normally requires a permit through the city's Development Services Department, and properties in unincorporated Bexar County go through the county instead. Requirements and fees differ, as do the rules in the smaller surrounding municipalities such as Schertz, Boerne and New Braunfels. Get it in writing that the contractor is pulling the permit.
Is WPI-8 windstorm certification relevant in Bexar County?
No. WPI-8 is the Texas Department of Insurance certificate of compliance for windstorm construction and it applies only in the 14 first tier Gulf Coast counties plus a defined coastal part of Harris County. Bexar County is far inland and is not in that zone, so there is no WPI-8 requirement for a San Antonio roof. If a contractor raises windstorm certification for a Bexar County property, ask them to explain why, because it does not apply.
Is a metal roof noisier or hotter than shingles?
Neither, in a properly built system. Noise is a function of what sits under the panel: over solid decking with underlayment and an attic below, rainfall on a residential metal roof is not meaningfully louder than on shingles. On heat, unpainted or light coloured metal reflects a large share of solar radiation and many metal roofs meet Energy Star reflectance criteria, which usually makes the attic cooler in a Texas summer, not hotter. The barn roof reputation comes from uninsulated open framed structures.
What should I ask before signing a metal roofing contract?
Ask for the panel gauge, the profile, the coating system and the metal substrate in writing, because those four things drive most of the price difference. Ask whether the panel is mechanically seamed or snap locked and what clip spacing is used, ask what the manufacturer warranty covers as against the contractor's workmanship warranty and for how long, and ask for current general liability and workers' compensation certificates sent directly by the insurer.
