About

Kirtley & Sons Roofing is a Tomball based roofing contractor at 16714 Hereford Rd, serving Tomball, Houston and the surrounding northwest Harris County suburbs. The business dates to 1961 and is now in its third generation of family ownership. Its BBB file lists Richard Kirtley as owner and Justin Kirtley as customer contact, with the current corporate entity, Kirtley & Sons Contracting, Inc., incorporated in 2010. The company handles residential and commercial roofing, roof replacement, repair, inspections, leak detection, maintenance and roof coatings, plus sheet metal work and gutters. Materials include CertainTeed asphalt shingles, standing seam metal, Spanish tile and low slope commercial systems such as TPO. CertainTeed's own contractor profile for the company lists it as a ShingleMaster PRO since 2009 and a Low-Slope Roofing Master since 2010, which is the credential set behind CertainTeed's extended SureStart PLUS coverage. It is a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating, accredited since April 2010. RCAT records the company as holding the Licensed Roofing Contractor credential rather than plain membership. Tomball sits well inland in northwest Harris County, so the routine roofing issues here are thunderstorm wind, heavy rain, hail and heat ageing.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #03-0308 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

Very good experience start to finish. Justin was honest about the need to replace my roof. I could have waited per his opinion, however I was ready. And being a contractor myself, I know it doesn't get less expensive if you wait a year or 2. The crew was professional and they got the job done in one day. If you need a roof replacement they are a great company to work with.

***AWESOME JOB*** I highly recommend Kirtley & Son's Roofing if you are planning on replacing your roof. We have used them in the past for minor repairs on our roof and did an amazing job. So, when it was time to replace the entire roof, we thought about them. Richard Kirtley took the time to visit with us and explained everything. They did an amazing job and completed the task without any issue. The crew worked fast and efficient.

From the initial consultation to the final cleanup, Kirtley & Sons Roofing company exceeded my expectations. They provided a thorough review of the roof replacement options, discussing materials, timelines, and other considerations clearly and professionally. The pricing was transparent and detailed with no surprises while they also assisted in discussions with the insurance company. The installation crew was outstanding. They arrived early, worked very hard, and demonstrated true craftmanship in removing the old roof and installing the new roof. The job was completed on time and the site was inspected and cleaned up. A final walkthrough was conducted with myself to review any questions and check that all work was done as expected. If you are looking for a roofing company that combines expertise, integrity, and top-tier execution, then Kirtley & Sons Roofing company is it.

Justin and his team were extremely professional and great to work with. Justin is a man of his word and they did a fantastic job on my home. I would refer them to anyone needing a new roof on their property. It’s encouraging to know there are businesses that operate like this.

Kirtley & Sons just completed a full roof replacement for us and we couldn’t be happier. Justin is a great communicator and gives honest and well thought out options during the project bidding process. The crew did an awesome job with cleanup leaving our yard like nothing had ever happened. Just great, honest people, to work with and I highly recommend!

Frequently asked

Is Kirtley & Sons licensed by the State of Texas?
Texas has no state roofing license, so no Tomball roofer holds one. What this company does hold is RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential, which is an industry qualification earned through RCAT, plus manufacturer credentials with CertainTeed. Insurance certificates should still be verified separately.
What is the difference between RCAT Member and RCAT Licensed?
RCAT Member means a company belongs to the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas and pays dues. The Licensed Roofing Contractor credential is separately earned and tested. Kirtley & Sons is recorded as Licensed, which is the stronger of the two and should not be described simply as membership.
What CertainTeed credentials does the company hold?
CertainTeed's own contractor profile lists Kirtley & Sons as a ShingleMaster PRO since 2009 and a Low-Slope Roofing Master since 2010. Those credentials are what allow a contractor to offer CertainTeed's extended SureStart PLUS warranty coverage on qualifying systems.
How long has the company been in business?
Since 1961, according to both the company and its BBB file, which records a business start date of 1 May 1961 and incorporation of the present entity, Kirtley & Sons Contracting, Inc., in February 2010. The business describes three generations of family ownership.
Which areas does it serve?
Tomball, Houston, Cypress, Spring, Katy, Magnolia, Humble, Jersey Village and The Woodlands.
What causes most roof damage around Tomball?
Thunderstorm wind, heavy rain and hail, along with the ordinary heat ageing that shortens shingle life in the Gulf Coast climate. Poor attic ventilation makes that ageing worse, so ask any contractor to assess ventilation and decking condition rather than quoting a shingle price alone.
What roofing materials does it install?
CertainTeed asphalt shingles, standing seam metal and Spanish tile on the residential side, plus low slope and flat commercial systems including TPO. It also fabricates sheet metal in house.
Are impact resistant Class 4 shingles worth it in the Houston area?
They can be. Hail is less frequent here than in North Texas but not rare, and Class 4 shingles rated under the UL 2218 impact test qualify for a premium discount with many Texas insurers. Ask your own carrier what discount applies before you specify, and get the product rating documented.
Do I need a permit for a re-roof in Tomball or unincorporated Harris County?
Texas has no statewide building code office issuing roof permits, so requirements differ between the City of Tomball, the City of Houston and unincorporated Harris County. Ask the contractor to confirm what your specific address requires and who is pulling the permit.
What should I check before signing a roofing contract?
Request current general liability and workers compensation certificates directly from the insurer, a written scope naming the shingle or membrane line, underlayment, decking and ventilation allowances, confirmation that the manufacturer system warranty will be registered, the workmanship warranty term in writing, lien waivers at each payment, and a payment schedule that does not require payment in full before work starts.
