About

Bison Roofing is a family owned roofing contractor founded in San Antonio in 2004 by Genaro Montelongo. Its San Antonio office is at 1445 Austin Highway, and the company also operates from Alamo in the Rio Grande Valley. The Better Business Bureau lists Genaro Montelongo Jr. as owner and Manny Luera as vice president, records a business start date of August 2004, and has accredited the company with an A+ rating since December 2008. The company is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, the top tier of the Owens Corning contractor network and one that Owens Corning limits to a small fraction of the roofers it certifies. That status is what lets Bison offer the Owens Corning Platinum Protection limited lifetime warranty alongside its own workmanship warranty. The BBB profile also lists GAF, CertainTeed, Versico, Mule-Hide and Thermotek among the product lines it works with. Work splits across residential, multi family and commercial roofing. On the residential side the company promotes Class 4 impact resistant architectural shingles, metal roofing and Spanish tile. On the commercial and multi family side it handles TPO, PVC, metal and other low slope systems, plus storm and hail restoration with emergency tarping. Published Texas coverage runs from San Antonio out to New Braunfels, Georgetown, Austin, Houston, Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley around McAllen. Bexar County is hail and heat country, and Class 4 shingles are the usual response.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this listing yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

Bison Roofing, Out of the 3 Companys I spoke with to get my roof work done were some of the most professional people I've dealt with while trying to figure out who I wanted to get my roof done with. Derrick and Robert kept me updated on everything that was going on. I didn't have to reach out to them. I will definitely refer anyone looking to get roof work done needs to seek out Bison Roofing. I can't forget Marz she was on point to with getting the paperwork to me explaining everything in detail. Great Job and thanks for my New Roof.

I called bison roofing and I'm blessed that I got Robert as my roof expert. We did not go with bison for convenience reasons with another company. But he displayed the most professional experience, and exceptional customer experience. He may not have gotten the repair job, but when it comes to replacing my roof. Bison roofing will be the company I call. I'm glad I got to meet Robert. If he is your inspector, you're in good hands. I promise.

Any questions I had were answered quickly and they made everything easy to understand. Their expertise and customer service truly set them apart. I can't recommend Robert, Marz, and the Bison Roofing team enough!

I contacted Bison Roofing to provide me a quote for my chimney and surrounding that needed to be fixed. Robert Garcia did the inspection and he was super professional and helpful. I hired them to do the job, it was an easy process and they finished in one day. Also, shout out also to Derick V who was also very professional and friendly! The entire team was great. Highly recommended!!

Frequently asked

Does Texas issue a state roofing licence?
No. Texas has no statewide roofing contractor license, so no San Antonio roofer can accurately claim to be state licensed for roofing. What you can check is current general liability and workers compensation insurance, standing with the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT), and any City of San Antonio registration requirements.
What does RCAT Member mean here?
It means the company pays dues and belongs to the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas. RCAT separately awards a Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) earned through experience and testing. Bison Roofing is listed here as an RCAT Member, which is association membership rather than that credential.
What is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor?
It is the highest tier of Owens Corning's contractor network and is awarded to a small share of the roofers Owens Corning certifies. Platinum Preferred contractors can register the Owens Corning Platinum Protection limited lifetime warranty, which covers the system rather than only the shingles. It is a manufacturer program, not a government license, and the warranty only holds if the full system is installed to spec and registered.
Is Bison Roofing insured?
Ask for the certificates and read them yourself. You want a current general liability certificate and a current workers compensation certificate, both naming the contracting entity, ideally sent by the insurance agent. Insurance is verified separately from this listing rather than inferred from a manufacturer certification.
What damages roofs most in Bexar County?
Hail, thunderstorm wind and heat. San Antonio sits well inland, so this is a hail and heat market. Hail bruises asphalt shingle mats and dents soft metals, wind creases tabs at ridges and rakes, and long summer heat ages sealant strips and degrades exposed flashing sealant.
Are Class 4 impact resistant shingles worth it in San Antonio?
In hail country they usually pay for themselves over time. Class 4 shingles pass a steel ball impact test and resist moderate hail better than standard architectural shingles, and most Texas insurers offer a premium discount. Confirm the discount with your own insurer before you commit, then ask for the price difference on the quote.
Does Bison handle apartments and commercial buildings?
Yes. The company runs dedicated multi family and commercial lines and works with TPO, PVC, metal and other low slope systems as well as steep slope shingle and tile. For a commercial roof, ask for the specific membrane, thickness and attachment method, and for the manufacturer warranty term being registered.
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in San Antonio?
Permitting in Texas is handled locally because there is no uniformly enforced statewide residential code. Check with the City of San Antonio development services department, or with Bexar County if you are outside city limits, and have the contract state that the roofer pulls the permit and schedules any required inspection.
Which areas does the company cover?
Bison publishes Texas coverage across San Antonio, New Braunfels, Georgetown, Austin, Houston, Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley around McAllen and Alamo, and the company has expanded outside Texas as well. Confirm which office would run your job, since crew travel distance affects both scheduling and how quickly someone returns for warranty work.
What should I settle before signing a roofing contract?
Get the scope in writing: tear off versus overlay, the per sheet price for replacing rotten decking, underlayment, ventilation, drip edge and all flashing. Then confirm the total price, the payment schedule, the workmanship warranty term, which manufacturer warranty is being registered and by whom, and the insurance certificates. Never pay in full before the work is complete and inspected.
