About

West Texas Roofing operates from 4117 SW 49th Ave in southwest Amarillo, in Randall County, and has been in business since 1956 according to both BBB records and the company's own "Roofing Texas Since 1956" line. Jim Roberts is listed as president, with Ronnie Roberts as vice president. Despite the name, this is a Panhandle company, not a Permian Basin or Gulf Coast one. Its published base and the service area described on its own site are Amarillo and the surrounding Texas Panhandle, and a customer testimonial on the site references rental property work in Pampa. Credentials here are unusually well documented. The RCAT directory shows the company holding the separately earned Licensed Roofing Contractor credential, listed as Commercial & Residential Roofing License 03-0279 with Jim Roberts as CRRL, which is a different thing from plain association membership. GAF's own contractor directory lists West Texas Roofing at the GAF Certified level, which allows the System Plus and Silver Pledge limited warranties. The firm has been BBB Accredited since 1990 with an A+ rating and has been an Amarillo Chamber of Commerce member since 2002. Work covers both residential and commercial: installation, repair, tear off, replacement, inspections and flat roof leak repair. Materials run from composition shingles and wood through metal, DECRA stone coated steel, TPO and modified bitumen. The company states a ten year labour warranty on its work. Panhandle roofs face a distinct mix: hail during the spring and early summer storm season, sustained High Plains wind, occasional snow and ice, and sharp freeze and thaw swings that punish fasteners and flashings on both pitched and low slope roofs.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #03-0279 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

Absolutely outstanding. Levi inspected and inspected with the insurance adjuster. Everything went smoothly. The crew were courteous and thorough. Some decking needed repair and the work they did was excellent. Shortly after the roof was installed we experienced significant wind and rain. No leaks. I am enthusiastically endorsing West Texas Commercial Roofing. You can’t go wrong with them.

Today, West Texas Commercial Roofing did an outstanding job replacing my 19 year old roof. Levi was very professional and answered all of my questions. He gave me such a reasonable estimate that I didn't even get another one. After the estimate, he had one of his workers cover the leaks until he could get his workers here to replace it. He also found the right color shingles that I had requested. The roofers were here around 7:30 am and finished between 12:30-1 pm. They covered all my plants and breakables & did such an excellent job of cleaning up their mess that you couldn't even tell that they had been here. I recommend West Texas Commercial Roofing for all your roofing needs. Thank you, Levi, for all your help. You and your family are really great people! Nancy Fish Lubbock, Tx

I contacted Levi after having contractors from a major city 300miles east of here try and fast talk me. I’ve had a couple of bad experiences with other roofers in years past. I wanted a contractor to handle the entire job. My house and car sustained significant damage from baseball size hail and 100mph plus wind. My car was totaled. Levi came over and from the start he conducted himself as the professional that he is. He took a look at the damage and wrote me an estimate on the spot. I had double pain windows busted out, a roof only two years old totalled, the chimney siding completely busted, the faux stucco, and all of the fascia. Since the entire area had sustained damage I knew it would take a little while. West Texas Commercial Roofing was able to get to my roof rather quickly all things considered, and soon after the rest of the repair were completed. They didn’t cut any corners. They installed a better shingle than the house was built with, better windows, custom made fascia on the job site and new siding. I couldn’t be happier with the quality of work and craftsmanship. I was a project manager for several years and they certainly have my seal of approval. The same day the job was finished, three different neighbors came over to compliment the house. Thank you Levi, and thank you to your respective crews and staff. When all was said and done there were no surprises like I’ve had in the past from other contractors. I’d recommend West Texas Commercial Roofing to anyone. T. Brown Lubbock, TX

My experience started in May 2024 with the so called non Tornado. My feeling is simple looks like a duck walks like a duck etc…. Well I’m a rookie when it comes to West Texas weather. I never expected the damage. Lucky for me Mr. Levi Bond knocked on my door offering to cover my broken skylights. He never asked for a commitment or money. Coming from California I had my suspicions but I couldn’t have been proven more wrong. Levi made Up grading to a metal roof pretty painless . He provided all necessary info to make my decision. Because of my prior career I question everything. Levi answered every question without excuse. I would recommend this company to anyone and you would be lucky to get Levi as a representative .

Frequently asked

Does Texas require a state roofing licence, and what credential does this company hold?
Texas issues no state roofing licence, so that question has no state answer. What West Texas Roofing does hold, according to the RCAT directory, is the Licensed Roofing Contractor credential, listed as Commercial & Residential Roofing License 03-0279 under Jim Roberts CRRL. That is an association credential earned through RCAT, not a government licence, and it is separate from simply being a dues paying member.
What does CRRL after a roofer's name mean?
CRRL stands for Commercial and Residential Roofing License, one of the Licensed Roofing Contractor credentials administered by the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas. The related designations are RRL for residential and CRL for commercial. Earning one requires meeting RCAT's experience, examination and insurance requirements. Plenty of RCAT companies are members only and hold no such credential, so it is worth asking which one a contractor actually has.
What weather does a roof in Amarillo actually have to survive?
Four things, and they are not the same as the Gulf Coast or the Permian Basin. Spring and early summer hail, which is the main insurance driver. Sustained High Plains wind, which tests edge metal, ridge caps and fastening patterns year round. Winter snow and ice, including ice at eaves and around penetrations. And a large daily and seasonal temperature swing that drives freeze and thaw cycling through decking, flashing and sealants.
Are Class 4 impact resistant shingles worth it in the Panhandle?
For most Amarillo homeowners, yes, they are worth pricing. Class 4 is the top rating in the UL 2218 steel ball impact test, and the Panhandle sits in the part of Texas that takes repeated hail. Many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof. Call your own carrier for the exact credit before you buy, because the discount and the qualifying product list differ by insurer.
Is a metal roof a good idea on the High Plains?
It is a common choice around Amarillo. Metal panels shed snow and rain well, resist wind uplift when the panel and clip system is specified and fastened correctly, and last far longer than a typical shingle roof. The trade offs are cost, the need for correct expansion allowance across long panel runs, and the fact that a severe hail event can dent panels cosmetically even when the roof still performs. Ask specifically about panel gauge and the hail warranty.
What is DECRA and why do Panhandle roofers offer it?
DECRA is stone coated steel roofing: a steel panel formed to look like shingle, shake or tile and finished with a stone granule coating. It is offered around Amarillo because it combines the wind and impact behaviour of steel with a textured appearance closer to a conventional roof, which suits neighbourhoods where a plain standing seam panel looks out of place. It is a premium product, so get the price compared against both metal and Class 4 shingles.
What goes on Amarillo commercial buildings, and what fails first?
Low slope commercial roofs around Amarillo are typically single ply TPO or modified bitumen. What fails first is almost never the field of the membrane. It is the details: seams, curbs and penetration flashings, drain and scupper connections, and low areas that pond after a storm. On an older building, ask for a leak survey and photographs of those details before agreeing to a full replacement, because targeted flat roof leak repair is often the honest answer.
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Amarillo?
Texas has no statewide building code office, so permitting and inspection are handled locally. In Amarillo that means the city's building safety department, and note that the city straddles the Potter and Randall county line, so the county on your deed depends on which side of that line you are on. Have the contractor pull the permit in its own name and give you the final inspection record.
How do I confirm a roofer's insurance rather than taking their word for it?
Ask for the agent's name and phone number, then have the certificate of insurance emailed to you directly by the agency. Confirm two coverages: general liability, which covers damage to your property, and workers compensation, which covers a worker injured on your roof. If there is no workers compensation in place, an injury on your job can become a claim against you. Insurance is verified separately by this directory.
What should I ask before signing after a Panhandle hail storm?
Ask who is actually doing the work, because storm chasing crews follow hail across the Panhandle and disappear afterwards, while a company with a fixed Amarillo yard is still there in five years. Get the full scope in writing, including decking replacement price and ventilation. Confirm the workmanship warranty length separately from the manufacturer warranty. Never sign a document that assigns your insurance claim or benefits to the contractor, and never pay the full amount up front.
