About

Thornton's Roofing Company is a family owned roofing contractor working out of 1102 Petroleum Drive, Suite A, Abilene. It handles residential and commercial work: roof replacement and repair, new installation, emergency roofing, storm damage restoration and insurance claim work, in composite shingle and metal. Its published hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm with calls answered around the clock, and it runs adjacent site services that matter after a storm, including tree removal, stump grinding, land clearing, hedge trimming, crane service and dumpster rental. On credentials, this one holds up better than most. The BBB profile for the Abilene business shows accreditation since 11 March 2022 with an A+ rating, and lists Rick Copeland as manager. The company appears in Owens Corning's own contractor directory as a Preferred Contractor and in GAF's own commercial roofer directory, which are the manufacturers' listings rather than badges pasted onto a website. It is also a member of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce. BBB dates the business to 2011 with the local file opened in March 2022. Abilene and Taylor County sit in West Central Texas, and the roofing problem here is its own. Spring and early summer hail drives most of the insurance claims. Sustained high wind coming off the plains finds loose edges, ridge caps and badly fastened metal panels. And the sun is punishing, cooking asphalt shingles and drying out sealant faster than in the wetter eastern half of the state. That combination is why metal is so common on roofs out here, and why Class 4 impact rated shingles are worth a conversation with your carrier before the next hail season.

Highlights

Abilene based with a published street address and suite number, Monday to Friday hours and calls answered 24/7, covering Abilene, Brownwood, San Angelo and Lubbock from that one office.
BBB accredited since March 2022 with an A+ rating, which is a stronger position than most Texas roofers who show only a rating.
Appears in Owens Corning's own contractor directory as a Preferred Contractor and in GAF's own commercial roofer directory, so the manufacturer credentials are checkable at the source rather than only claimed on the website.
Works both composite shingle and metal, the two systems that carry most West Central Texas roofs.
Runs its own tree, crane and dumpster services, which matters when a storm drops limbs on a roof and the debris has to go somewhere before the reroof can start.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #03-0588 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

I had Thornton’s Roofing Company replace my roof after discovering a manufacturer defect on a roof that was only four years old. From the initial inspection to the final cleanup, the entire process was handled professionally and without any headaches. Zachary Collins was great to work with throughout the project. The warranty claim process could have easily become frustrating, but Zac helped guide me through it from start to finish. He was always available by phone or text, answered my questions, and kept me updated on what was happening next. I never felt like I was being left in the dark. Once everything was approved, the roofing crew showed up as scheduled, completed the work on time, and did an excellent job. The quality of the roof looks great, and the cleanup was impressive. When they finished, it looked like they had never been there. What stood out most to me was the communication and follow through. Zac did what he said he was going to do and was there whenever I needed help or had questions. That level of customer service is hard to find these days. I would not hesitate to use Thornton’s Roofing Company again, and I’ve already recommended them to others. If you’re looking for a roofing company that does quality work and takes care of its customers, I highly recommend giving them a call.

Colby was our agent, i would highly recommend working with him. He is hands on from start to finish. We had a very open communications all the way through. During the roof installation he was around and insuring the job went to his satisfaction, more so looking out for us. The contractor they use is the best. The guys installing the roof are professionals. I watch the process just to get a feel of how it is done and to see how the crew works together. I was very impressed. Clean up was so good you couldn’t tell if they were here or not. I gave a 5 star as I couldn’t find any fault in the process and or the installation. I would highly recommended Thornton’s Roofing Company for any roofing job or projects to my friends and family in the future.

Can’t say enough about the professionalism of Jaime Lara and his crew! We learned more than we ever thought we needed to know about roofing thanks to Jaime’s attention to detail and desire to make sure we understood each step of dealing with insurance, the process of roofing and the clean up of our property after the job was done! His roofing crew worked quickly, yet carefully, as they removed the old shingles and made repairs to damaged decking. Cleaning up as they went through the process from beginning to end, made the final clean up go quickly and thoroughly. They left nothing for us to have to take care of after they finished-more than impressive! Job well done in all areas. Five stars isn’t enough for Jaime and the guys at Thornton’s Roofing!!!

We had an excellent experience with Thornton's Roofing, from the first phone call to the last shingle installation. I was very impressed with Colby - he kept us informed every step of the way and was very proactive. I never had to chase him down for anything - excellent communication! If you need a new roof, don't hesitate to call Thornton's. We also use Thornton's for our tree service - same people. Can't say enough good about all these folks!! 🌟

Frequently asked

Is it Thorntons or Thornton's?
The company brands itself with the apostrophe. Its own website, Facebook page, Yelp listing and Abilene Chamber entry all read Thornton's Roofing Company. RCAT and the BBB render the legal entity without the apostrophe, as Thorntons Roofing Company LLC. Same business either way.
Where is it based, and does it have more than one office?
The only address the company publishes is 1102 Petroleum Drive, Suite A, Abilene, TX 79602, which is also the address on its BBB and Yelp listings and its Abilene Chamber entry. Abilene is the office. Brownwood, San Angelo and Lubbock are service areas covered from there rather than separate branches.
What manufacturer credentials does it actually hold?
It appears in Owens Corning's own contractor directory as a Preferred Contractor, and in GAF's own commercial roofer directory. Those are the manufacturers' listings rather than a logo pasted onto a contractor website, which is the distinction worth checking with any roofer who claims a certification.
Is it BBB accredited?
Yes. The BBB profile for the Abilene business shows accreditation since 11 March 2022 and an A+ rating. BBB dates the underlying business to 2011 and the local file to March 2022.
What actually damages roofs in Abilene and Taylor County?
Three things, mostly. Spring and early summer hail, which drives the bulk of insurance claims across West Central Texas. Sustained high wind off the plains, which finds loose shingle edges, ridge caps and poorly fastened metal panels long before it lifts a whole roof. And very intense sun, which bakes asphalt shingles, drives off granules and dries out sealant and flashing mastic faster than it does in the wetter eastern half of the state.
Why is metal so common on West Central Texas roofs?
Because it answers the wind and the sun well. A correctly fastened standing seam or exposed fastener panel resists uplift better than an aging shingle roof, it does not shed granules under UV, and it copes with the wind driven dust and grit that comes with the territory. Hail will still dent it, and many Texas policies treat denting on metal as cosmetic, so read your policy's cosmetic damage exclusion before you choose metal.
Are Class 4 impact resistant shingles worth it in Abilene?
If you are staying in the house, usually yes. Class 4 shingles pass the UL 2218 steel ball impact test, and most Texas carriers apply a homeowners premium discount for them. Ask your own carrier what discount it gives, because the size of that credit is what decides whether the upgrade pays for itself.
Is the company licensed by the State of Texas?
No, and nor is any Texas roofer. Texas issues no state roofing licence. RCAT, an industry association, runs the credential that does exist, and RCAT lists this company as a Licensed Roofing Contractor for commercial and residential work. That is separate from, and harder to get than, ordinary RCAT membership.
Do I need a permit for a reroof in Abilene?
Texas has no statewide building code that settles this, so permitting and inspection are decided locally. Check the current requirement and fee with the City of Abilene's building inspections department, or the relevant county office if you are outside the city limits, and have the contractor pull whatever permit is needed rather than starting without one.
What should I ask before signing?
Ask for a general liability certificate emailed to you by the insurance agent rather than handed over by the salesperson, and ask about workers compensation cover for the crew. Ask which specific Owens Corning or GAF system warranty the company can register on your roof and what that requires. Get the workmanship warranty in writing. And on an insurance job, remember that Texas law does not permit a contractor to absorb or waive your deductible.
