Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this listing yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

Helsley Roofing Co. was highly recommended by close, trusted friends & I am very grateful they did! From the first call talking with Heather and then Lisa; to them scheduling Larry Keithly to check out where a leak might be coming from. The communication, attention to detail, and professionalism from everyone has been excellent! Larry was able to see what was going on with the roof and gave a very reasonable estimate. He even removed the very old unused satellite dish (that caused the problem) and did a temporary cover over the hole that day! He was able to get us on the schedule quickly and the complete permanent repair was made. Everyone at Helsley has made getting this repair easy and given peace of mind. I’m happy to say I highly recommend them as well and will use them in the future!! Thanks to everyone at Helsley Roofing!!

I had a fantastic experience with Helsley Roofing. They helped me with roof repair, downspout replacement, and removing an old satellite dish, and the entire process was seamless from start to finish. Their team was professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to clearly explain every step, which made me feel confident in the decisions being made. What stood out most was their honesty and integrity—they focused on what was truly best for my roof rather than upselling unnecessary work. If you’re looking for a reliable and trustworthy roofing company for repairs or exterior work, I highly recommend Helsley Roofing.

Had minor repairs over the past few years from bad work done by other companies, and replaced my roof after a hail storm. Never tried upselling on things I didn't need. Chris has been great to work with. I hope I don't need a new roof anytime soon, but if I do, I'll be giving them a call!

I have been a customer of Helsley through 2 roof replacements due to hail. Larry Keithley has always come through and taken great care of me. He and the others at Helsley have negotiated with the insurance company and gotten damage covered that the insurance was not going to cover. Also, their work on the roof is quick and professional, with great clean up afterward. I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone who needs roof repairs or a new roof.

Alan and Daniel Helsley are the very best in the business. I have been a very satisfied customer for fifteen years and would never consider calling anyone else. I highly recommend them for any roofing needs!

Frequently asked

Is Helsley Roofing Company licensed by the State of Texas?
No Texas roofer is, because Texas has no state roofing license. What you can check instead: proof of insurance, how long the company has operated locally, and voluntary credentials. Helsley Roofing has operated in Plano since 1992, is listed here as an RCAT member, and has been BBB accredited since 1993.
What is the difference between an RCAT Member and an RCAT Licensed Roofing Contractor?
An RCAT Member joins the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas and agrees to its code of ethics. The RCAT Licensed Roofing Contractor credential is a separate program requiring an exam and proof of insurance. The two are not interchangeable. Helsley Roofing is listed as a Member.
What does GAF Master Elite mean?
Master Elite is GAF's top residential contractor tier, limited to a small share of roofers, and it allows the contractor to offer GAF's strongest system warranties. Helsley Roofing describes itself as a GAF Master Elite Contractor and maintains a profile in GAF's residential contractor directory; ask the company to show its current certification when you get a quote.
Why do Plano and Collin County homeowners talk so much about hail?
North Texas sits in the heart of Hail Alley, and Collin County has taken several of the costliest hailstorms in Texas history. Hail is the number one reason roofs are replaced in the Plano area, which is why impact-resistant shingles and insurance claim experience matter more here than in most markets.
Are impact-resistant (Class 4) shingles worth the cost in North Texas?
Usually. Class 4 is the highest impact rating, and many Texas insurers discount premiums for homes with impact-resistant roofs. Helsley Roofing installs IR shingle lines. Confirm the exact discount with your insurance agent first, and make sure the shingle line is named in your contract.
How should I handle a hail damage insurance claim on my roof?
Get an inspection first so you know whether damage is worth a claim, then contact your insurer, who sends an adjuster. A roofer can inspect, document damage and meet the adjuster at your home, but Texas law does not allow contractors to negotiate your claim on your behalf. Helsley Roofing offers inspection assistance as part of its services.
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Plano?
Permitting in Texas is set city by city because there is no statewide enforcement body. Rules in Plano differ from Frisco, McKinney or Dallas. Ask the contractor whether your city requires a reroof permit and have the contract state who pulls it.
What warranties come with a new roof?
Two kinds: the shingle manufacturer's material warranty, which can be enhanced when the installer holds a top manufacturer credential, and the contractor's own workmanship warranty covering installation errors. Get both in writing, including how long the workmanship coverage lasts and what it excludes.
How do I compare roofing bids in the Dallas area?
Compare scope, not just price: full tear-off versus overlay, decking replacement terms, underlayment type, ventilation work, the exact shingle line, cleanup and disposal, and warranty lengths. A bid that is far below the others usually leaves something out. Also confirm each bidder carries its own insurance and has a physical local address.
What should I ask a roofer before signing a contract in Texas?
Ask for a certificate of insurance sent directly from the insurer, an itemized written scope, the payment schedule, who pulls any permit, the workmanship warranty terms, and a lien waiver at completion. Established local history matters; Helsley Roofing has been at this in Plano for over three decades.
