About

Wilson Roofing is the Austin company at 217-A South Commons Ford Road in west Austin, 78733, in Travis County, and wilsonroofing.com is genuinely its own website rather than a same name firm in another state. The address 217 S Commons Ford Rd Ste A and the phone (512) 263-3157 appear identically on the company's own site, its BBB profile, its RCAT record and its listing in GAF's contractor directory, which is what separates it from the several unrelated Wilson Roofing businesses operating elsewhere in the country. BBB records the business as started in October 1976 and BBB Accredited since 1981 with an A+ rating, one of the longest running accreditations among Austin roofers. The company's own history says Ralph Wilson bought the business from his older brother Doyle in 1976 and ran it for 42 years before his nephew Taylor Wilson purchased it in 2018 to keep it in the family, and it says the firm has roofed more than 80,000 homes. Justin Buschman is listed as the RCAT contact and as a BBB principal, and John Kaiser as vice president for new construction. RCAT lists the company as a Member. GAF's own contractor directory lists Wilson Roofing as a Master Elite contractor and shows a President's Club award, which is the top tier of GAF's residential programme and is restricted to a small share of roofers nationally. Work spans residential replacement and repair, new construction roofing for builders, and commercial work, supported by an in house metal shop, and BBB categorises the company for metal, flat and tile roofing, skylights, and hail and wind damage repair with insurance claim assistance. Central Texas roofs contend with spring hail and severe thunderstorm wind, along with the long Austin summer of high heat and ultraviolet exposure that ages shingles and makes attic ventilation worth getting right.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this listing yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

We had an excellent experience with Wilson Roofing, from office staff, lead contacts, inspectors, estimators, schedulers and roof installers. They accommodated our very tight timeline, communicated quickly & clearly, presented a detailed contract, provided a competitive & reasonable bid and were professional in all aspects of their work. The large roof crew arrived on time at 7 a.m., worked 8 hours straight with only a short lunch break, laid tarps all around the house, clearly had a system and knew their jobs, and did an excellent job of clean-up. Our yard may have looked better than before they arrived.😉 We cannot say enough good things about Wilson Roofing! Charlene Urwin & John Pratt

Wilson Roofing did an excellent job replacing our old roof. They were timely, efficient and cleaned up after themselves. Everyone was very nice to work with, and they did it all for a fair price. I highly recommend them

After several days of hard rains we discovered a small leak around the exhaust vent of the heating system. On a holiday weekend, of course. We contacted Wilson Roofing late on a Friday, confirmed that the leak was minor and being captured in a pan. There was a crew here early on the Tuesday after Memorial day. Our entire roof was inspected, photos were taken, and, as expected, time and Texas heat/sun had deteriorated the 8 year old sealant used when the house was built. The crew went over the entire roof, not just where the leak occurred, replacing sealant, checking flashing, everything. Let us know the shingles were in good shape, no need for further repairs, and all completed within the hour at a very reasonable cost. All in all, a very courteous, professional transaction. Highly recommend Wilson Roofing. They, and their extended family, have been in the home building and roofing business in Central Texas for a very long time, and have maintained a great "word of mouth" reputation. Very happy with their work. No leaks after the repair!

Great experience with Wilson Roofing! Ian set up a thorough inspection quickly. The inspector used my leak photos to find the exact issue and offered a solid long-term fix. The crew was punctual, efficient, and finished on schedule. It’s only been two days since the repair, but I am highly satisfied with their work so far!

I recently hired Wilson Roofing to find and repair a leak in my concrete tile roof. While assessing the roof, Teddy, the Wilson Roofing representative, not only quickly assessed the original problem, but also saw another area of concern which proved to be worse than my initial leak. Great catch Teddy! Within two days I received an estimate for the repairs, signed a contract and scheduled a day for the repairs. Asuncion and his crew completed the repairs in about 2 hours' time and did a beautiful job. It rained 1.4" that evening and there were no leaks at all! The next day, Wilson emailed me an invoice for the repairs. I especially appreciated the fact that they included a series of photographs thoroughly documenting all the work that had been done. That is great customer service! Wilson Roofing is professional, easy to work with, and a good value for the quality of work performed. I highly recommend them to anyone for any roofing needs you may have.

Frequently asked

Does Texas require a state roofing licence, and what should I check instead?
Texas does not issue a state roofing licence, so no Austin roofer has one. The meaningful checks are current general liability and workers compensation insurance confirmed directly with the insurer, RCAT standing, City of Austin permitting, and manufacturer credentials you can look up yourself. Wilson Roofing appears in the RCAT directory as a Member, is BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, and is listed by GAF as a Master Elite contractor.
What is the difference between an RCAT Member and an RCAT Licensed Roofing Contractor?
Membership in the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas means a company belongs to the association and pays dues. The Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned separately through RCAT's experience and examination requirements and is not the same thing. Wilson Roofing is listed as a Member. Since Texas has no state licence, neither status should be described as a government licence.
What does GAF Master Elite actually mean, and can I check it?
Master Elite is the top tier of GAF's residential contractor programme and requires the contractor to be properly insured, to have a track record and to maintain the standing year to year. GAF says only a small share of roofing contractors qualify. You can verify it yourself on GAF's own contractor directory at gaf.com rather than trusting a logo on a truck or a website, which is how it was confirmed for this listing.
How bad is hail in the Austin area?
Central Texas sits at the southern end of the Texas hail belt, and Austin and the surrounding Hill Country counties take damaging hail and severe thunderstorm wind most springs. It is less relentless than the Dallas and Fort Worth corridor but frequent enough that hail is the leading cause of roof replacement here. Impact resistant Class 4 shingles are widely used and most Texas insurers offer a premium credit for them.
Are Class 4 impact resistant shingles worth the extra cost in Austin?
Usually worth pricing. Class 4 is the top rating in the UL 2218 steel ball impact test and those shingles are less likely to fracture in a moderate hail event. The value depends on the discount your own insurer gives, which varies widely, so call your carrier and ask for the exact credit and the qualifying product list before deciding. On a long term home the credit plus the reduced chance of a claim usually justifies the upgrade.
What does Austin heat do to a roof?
Long stretches of high summer temperature and strong ultraviolet exposure age asphalt shingles from the top down, drying the asphalt and loosening granules, and they drive attic temperatures high enough to cook the underside of the deck when ventilation is poor. Balanced intake and exhaust ventilation, correct underlayment and adequate radiant control in the attic all extend roof life here more than most homeowners expect.
Is metal roofing a good choice around Austin and the Hill Country?
It is popular in the hills west of Austin. Standing seam metal handles wind well, sheds debris, reflects heat when finished with a cool roof coating, and lasts decades longer than shingle. The trade offs are higher up front cost, the need for correct expansion detailing on long panels, and cosmetic denting from severe hail. Contractors with an in house metal shop can fabricate flashings and trim to fit, which matters on complex Hill Country rooflines.
Do I need a permit to reroof a house in Austin?
Texas has no statewide building code office, so permitting is a local matter. The City of Austin runs its own development services permitting, and homes outside the city limits in Travis County or in neighbouring Hays and Williamson Counties follow those jurisdictions instead. Ask the contractor to pull the permit in its own name where one is required and to hand you the final inspection record when the job closes.
How do I verify a roofer's insurance rather than taking their word for it?
Ask for the insurance agent's name and telephone number, then have the certificate of insurance emailed to you directly by the agency. Confirm both general liability, which covers damage to your property, and workers compensation, which covers a worker hurt on your roof. Texas does not require most private employers to carry workers compensation, so confirm it rather than assume it. This directory verifies insurance separately.
What should I ask before signing a roofing contract in Central Texas?
Get a written scope covering tear off versus overlay, decking replacement price per sheet, underlayment type, flashing and valley detail, and ventilation. Ask for the workmanship warranty length in writing and confirm it is separate from the manufacturer's material warranty and whether it transfers on sale. Verify the manufacturer credential on the manufacturer's own website. Never sign a document assigning your insurance claim to the contractor, and do not pay in full before final inspection.
