About

Johnson Roofing is a family owned commercial and residential roofing contractor based at 574 Youngblood Rd just southeast of Waco in McLennan County. The company was started in 1941 by Margaret and Jack Johnson, grew into roofing under their son Bill Johnson, and has since been led by Sherri Johnson McDonald. Its BBB profile shows a 1941 business start date and BBB accreditation going back to 1967, with an A plus rating. The company installs and services a wide range of roof systems: TPO, EPDM, PVC, asphalt shingles, tile, slate, built up, modified bitumen, liquid applied rubber, standing seam metal, and metal wall panels. Alongside replacement and repair it offers roof inspections, storm damage and emergency response, roof coatings and waterproofing, preventative maintenance under the Johnson Roof Management program, and custom sheet metal fabrication in its own shop. Johnson Roofing says its projects run from South Texas to Oklahoma, largely along the I-35 corridor and into Louisiana, and it operates a North Texas branch in Fort Worth (listed separately in this directory). It is listed on GAF's own contractor locator as a GAF Master Elite roofer, belongs to RCAT, the National Roofing Contractors Association and the Central Texas chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America, and has been recognized with Baylor University's Large Family Business of the Year award in 2012 and a Texas Mutual safety award in 2021.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #03-0188 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

We contracted with Johnson Roofing to replace our damaged roof. They were extremely professional and did an OUTSTANDING job. They took extra care in protecting our property and landscape during the removal of the old roof and installation of the new roof. I highly recommend Johnson Roofing to anyone needing a new roof.

Took three visits to seal the roof. Leaked worse after first 2 attempts. On 3 rd visit sealed the leak problem but cracked my siding. It was only 2 years old. Large crack that is easily visible from the ground. 4 April 2025. 2 weeks short of a year since work done. Supervisor came out in December and stated he’d come back and do repair and clean tape marks off siding. Problem still remains and no contact from company. I do not recommend using this company

Teach your employees not to drive like idiots especially when in your company trucks. Almost caused an accident on Waco dr. License plate ended in 1679

Johnson Roofing does great quality work. I loved the quick response time with setting up an appointment to assess my roof for the estimate process. The workers are knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, go above and beyond. Prices are great and they have a variety of options. I would highly recommend them to anyone!

The Johnson Roofing team provided excellent customer service from the first visit (when Mr. Billy Johnson himself climbed on top our high, steep roof to assess the damage) throughout the entire process. They worked with our insurance estimate to correct and eventually secure additional funds that more accurately reflected real replacement costs. The work was completed professionally, quickly and on budget. Thanks to everyone at Johnson Roofing!

Frequently asked

Where is Johnson Roofing based?
At 574 Youngblood Rd, just southeast of Waco in McLennan County (the postal address shows as Robinson, TX 76706). The company also runs a North Texas branch office in Fort Worth.
How long has Johnson Roofing been in business?
Since 1941. It was founded by Margaret and Jack Johnson, expanded into roofing under Bill Johnson, and its BBB profile lists a 1941 business start date.
Does Texas license roofing contractors?
No. There is no state roofing license in Texas. The checks that actually matter are current general liability and workers compensation insurance, RCAT status, and any registration your city or county requires.
What is the difference between RCAT Member and RCAT Licensed?
RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) membership means the company pays dues and belongs to the association. The Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL, CRL) is earned separately through experience and testing. This listing carries the Licensed status, which is the stronger of the two.
Is the company certified by a shingle manufacturer?
GAF's own contractor locator lists Johnson Roofing Inc as a GAF Master Elite roofer, which is GAF's top residential certification tier. You can confirm it directly on gaf.com rather than taking any marketing claim at face value.
Does Johnson Roofing handle commercial buildings?
Yes, commercial work is a major part of the business. Systems include TPO, EPDM, PVC, modified bitumen, built up, metal, and liquid applied coatings, and the company offers scheduled maintenance and roof asset management plans for building owners.
Should I be thinking about impact resistant shingles in Central Texas?
Central Texas along I-35 takes regular hail. Class 4 impact resistant shingles are tested against a steel ball drop and generally survive hail better than standard shingles. Many Texas insurers offer a premium discount, so ask your carrier what credit applies before choosing.
Who pulls the permit for a reroof in the Waco area?
Texas has no statewide building code administration, so permitting and inspection rules are set locally. In Waco and the surrounding incorporated cities the roofing contractor usually pulls the permit. Get it in writing who is responsible.
What should I ask before signing a roofing contract?
Ask for a certificate of insurance sent directly by the agent, a written scope naming the exact roof system and underlayment, the workmanship warranty length, the manufacturer warranty being registered, the payment schedule, and the permit responsibility.
Does the company do its own metal work?
Yes. Johnson Roofing operates its own sheet metal shop for custom flashings, standing seam panels and architectural wall panels, and states that the shop holds an Underwriters Laboratories certificate.
