About

Ernie Smith & Sons Roofing is a family-owned roofing company founded in 1988 by Ernie and Terry Smith on the Texas Gulf Coast. Based at 19422B Highway 6 in Manvel (Brazoria County), the company has grown into a third-generation operation, with son Carl Smith serving as president. It handles both residential and commercial work, including asphalt shingle replacement, flat roof systems such as TPO and EPDM, roof coatings, storm damage repairs, and multi-family and HOA projects. The company is a GAF Master Elite contractor, a status verified in GAF's own contractor directory, and has been BBB accredited since 2007 with an A+ rating. It grew significantly after Gulf Coast storms including Hurricanes Rita, Ike, and Harvey, and now also operates offices in Central Texas, Victoria, and several other states. Manvel sits in Brazoria County, one of the 14 first-tier TWIA coastal counties, and the company publishes homeowner guidance on TWIA windstorm rules and WPI-8 certificates. It states that its roofing products are installed to meet TWIA requirements (stated by the company; the WPI-8 certificate itself is issued through TDI or a licensed engineer, not by the roofer). The company has recently been rebranding as Smith & Sons Roofing, and its website moved from essroofing.com to smithandsonsroofing.com.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #03-0323 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

We have used Ernie Smith & Sons Roofing twice on two different houses and we couldn't be more happy with the work that they did. They gave us a competitive quote and they do quality work. The project supervisor Emilio Perez kept us informed every step of the way. Emilio and his crew did an great job and cleaned up after the job was done.

Safety Hazard Corrected, but Cost Me Out-of-Pocket I hired this company for a roof replacement in 2023. I recently discovered they had installed a screened attic vent over my dryer exhaust. Per Killeen Building Code (IRC M1502.3), this is a major fire hazard as screens trap lint and block airflow. Because my dryer stopped working shortly after the roof install, this was a latent defect only caught recently by an HVAC professional when I purchased a new set. He stated he could see the vent blocked with lint. The Good: Once notified, the company sent someone out to provide some parts and labor for free to swap the vent. The contractors who fixed it were great. The Bad: Before agreeing to the fix, I was told that they “only replaced what was already there”. When he finally agreed to fix their error, he initially suggested "modifying" an attic vent that I would have to purchase (cutting the grate) rather than using a proper part. To ensure my home was safe and up to code, I had to spend $80 of my own money to purchase a dedicated dryer vent with a backdraft damper. Advice: If you use this team, verify every vent type they install. I am now paying an additional fee for an HVAC tech to clean the line and verify the airflow. I appreciate the free labor, but I shouldn't have had to pay for the materials to fix their original error. As always, Monique is amazing checking my roof today in spite of inclement weather.

The folks at Ernie Smith & Sons Roofing are incredible! Their crew came to our house on May 15, 2026 and replaced our entire roof that same day. We want to especially thank Victor Gutierrez for his hard work and patience in helping us get our new roof. He was present at the intial inspection and stayed in contact with us thru the entire process. He not only was helpful in filing a claim and helping us receive some funding from the tile manufacture, he also helped us find and obtain less expensive financing alternatives. Thank you, also to Terry, the Roofing Crew, and all your staff who called and kept in touch with us through the whole process from start to finish. We would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking to replace or have work done on their roof. THANK YOU!!!

They installed my roof 26 years ago, and the shingles had been worn due to 7 hurricanes and who knows how many wind storms. The shingle company made good on the 30 year warranty. I had Ernie Smith and Sons install an all new roof knowing that with hurricane season coming up, my roof is safe. Told my neighbor about this company, and he asked them for an estimate to get their roof done. They even did my dad's house. Best damn company in this area. I strongly recommend them to everyone.

Miguel did a great job replacing the ridge row on our house after a hail storm and repairing where an animal had chewed the edges of the chimney. . He made sure the ridge shingles matched to original. He worked in a timely manner. He took pictures to show how it looked from above once he was through. He was very personable and explained what he was doing. We enjoyed talking to him. Ernie Smith and Sons have done our roof and other repairs before and we trust them as well as giving us a good price. They are a great company to work with! We will continue to do so!

Frequently asked

Is Ernie Smith & Sons Roofing licensed by the State of Texas?
Texas has no state roofing license, so no roofer can claim one. What matters instead is insurance, reputation, and voluntary credentials. This company holds the RCAT Licensed Roofing Contractor credential, a separately earned designation from the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas, which goes beyond plain RCAT membership.
Does the company handle windstorm (WPI-8) work in Brazoria County?
Manvel is in Brazoria County, one of the 14 first-tier TWIA coastal counties where a WPI-8 certificate of compliance is needed to keep TWIA windstorm coverage. The company publishes guidance on TWIA rules and states its roofs are installed to meet TWIA requirements. Note the roofer builds to the windstorm spec; the WPI-8 certificate itself is issued through the Texas Department of Insurance or a licensed professional engineer.
How long has Ernie Smith & Sons Roofing been in business?
The company was founded in 1988 by Ernie and Terry Smith and has operated under the same name and phone number since. BBB records confirm a start date of September 1988, and the business is now run by the second and third generations of the Smith family.
Is the company GAF certified?
Yes. GAF's own contractor directory lists Ernie Smith & Sons Roofing LLC of Manvel as a GAF Master Elite contractor, GAF's highest residential tier. Master Elite contractors can offer GAF's strongest warranties, including the Golden Pledge Limited Warranty on qualifying systems.
Does the company do commercial or flat roofing?
Yes. It positions itself as a flat roof specialist and works with TPO and EPDM membranes, roof coatings, and metal panels, alongside shingle and clay tile for sloped structures. It also serves multi-family communities and HOAs.
What should homeowners verify before signing a roofing contract in Texas?
Ask for a certificate of general liability insurance sent directly from the insurer, confirm workers compensation or occupational accident coverage, get the scope and price in writing, and be wary of contractors who offer to waive or rebate your insurance deductible, which is illegal in Texas.
Will my homeowners insurance cover storm damage to my roof?
Wind and hail damage is typically covered under a standard Texas homeowners policy, subject to your wind/hail deductible. In first-tier coastal counties like Brazoria, windstorm coverage often comes through TWIA instead, which has its own inspection requirements. The company assists customers with insurance claims, but the claim decision always rests with your insurer.
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Manvel?
Texas has no statewide building code for permitting, so requirements are set city by city. Check with the City of Manvel (or Brazoria County for unincorporated areas) before work begins, and confirm who is responsible for pulling any required permit in your contract.
Are impact-resistant shingles worth it in the Houston area?
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles can better withstand hail and may qualify for a discount on the wind/hail portion of your homeowners premium with many Texas insurers. Ask your insurer about discounts before choosing materials, and get the shingle class documented on your invoice.
Does the company operate outside the Houston area?
Yes. Beyond its Manvel headquarters and the Greater Houston area, the company reports offices in Central Texas (Killeen) and Victoria, plus locations in Florida, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Georgia.
