About

Tarrytown Roofing is an Austin roofing and exterior contractor named after the Tarrytown neighbourhood west of downtown, operating from 1717 West 6th Street, Suite 100, in Travis County. It was founded by James Wolfgang Kuntz, who is named as managing member on the company's BBB profile. The BBB records the business as starting in August 2024 and accredited since February 2025, so this is a new company, and its "50 years of combined experience" line refers to the staff rather than the business itself. The service list runs wider than roofing alone: residential, commercial and multi family roofing, roof replacement and repair (branded SHINGLE Rx), roof health inspections, gutter installation, exterior siding, windows, skylights, chimney work, decks and patios and painting. Materials span asphalt shingles, metal, slate and wood shake on the steep slope side, and EPDM, TPO and PVC on flat commercial roofs. Coverage extends well beyond Austin. The company publishes service area pages for the Austin metro (Tarrytown, Hyde Park, Westlake, Rollingwood, Zilker, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Leander, Pflugerville, Hutto, Kyle, Buda, San Marcos, Wimberley, Bee Cave), the Bryan and College Station area, and Dallas-Fort Worth, and it states its radius as sixty miles from downtown Austin and forty miles from Dallas and Fort Worth. Its BBB profile lists a second location in Bryan. Manufacturer credentials it advertises, CertainTeed ShingleMaster and Malarkey Certified Pro, could not be confirmed in those manufacturers' own directories and are recorded as stated by the company.

Highlights

BBB accredited since February 2025 with the founder, James W. Kuntz, named on the profile
Covers far more of the building envelope than most roofers, including siding, windows, skylights, chimneys, gutters and decks
Handles flat commercial membranes (EPDM, TPO, PVC) alongside steep slope shingle, metal, slate and shake
Publishes named service area pages across Austin neighbourhoods plus the Bryan and College Station area and Dallas-Fort Worth
A new business: BBB records the start date as August 2024, so there is a short track record to weigh against the depth of the service list

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this listing yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

We had a fantastic experience with Tarrytown Roofing. Jeff was quick to get his team onsite and assess a water leak we had in our roof. His team identified a number of tiles that needed to be replaced and recommended a reasonable scope to ensure the roof was repaired properly and to code. The communication was phenomenal throughout the process. I would strongly recommend Jeff and his entire team. If you can have a good experience with a roof repair Tarrytown is the company.

TarryTown Roofing stands out as a shining example of integrity and excellence in the Central Texas roofing industry. Jeffrey and his team embody professionalism and transparency, and their exceptional customer service is a standard that others in the industry would do well to emulate. My journey to find a trustworthy roofing company was born from a challenging experience in 2018 when I had my hail-damaged roof replaced by a well-known, established local company that initially seemed reputable. Unfortunately, what followed was poor craftsmanship, unmet promises, and a frustrating experience. That encounter left me determined to find a roofing company that would restore my faith in quality service. Fast forward to 2025, when I reached out to several companies through Yelp for bids on repairing damaged shingles and a small hole caused by a tree branch. From the moment Jeffrey Jones arrived, I felt an immediate sense of trust. He not only provided a fair and honest estimate but also pointed out hail damage that I had not noticed. His positive demeanor, coupled with his transparency about what needed to be done put me at ease. There was no pressure—just clear, straightforward guidance. I moved forward with Jeffrey's fair quote for the minor repairs, and they were completed that same day with outstanding results. I also filed a claim for the hail damage Jeffrey mentioned. Jeffrey’s professionalism and candor during the minor repair earned my confidence. Without contacting other companies, I decided to take a leap of faith and asked Jeffrey to join the insurance inspector who would assess the hail damage. The insurance inspector confirmed the damage that Jeffrey brought to my attention and my claim was approved without any insurance drama. Throughout the process, I had many questions, but Jeffrey answered them all with patience and thoroughness. He even provided a detailed, line-by-line estimate and worked diligently with my insurance company to ensure everything was covered. His responsiveness to my calls and texts was always prompt, which made me feel supported at all times. The TarryTown Roofing crew arrived on time, and their professionalism and respect were refreshing. This was a tight-knit crew, that clearly had been together for a while. The finished product is nothing short of amazing. The entire experience with TarryTown Roofing was seamless and stress-free. Jeffrey went above and beyond, even crediting me for the initial shingle repair I had already paid for and offering a Veteran discount. I wholeheartedly recommend Jeffrey and TarryTown Roofing. If you need roof repairs or replacement, I encourage you to reach out to Jeffrey. His commitment to excellence will transform what can be a stressful experience into an effortless and rewarding one. You will not be disappointed.

Tarrytown Roofing exceeded my expectations from start to finish. Their team is incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to clearly explain every step of the process, which made the whole experience stress free and easy to understand. The customer service was outstanding responsive, professional, and genuinely focused on making sure everything was done right. From the initial inspection to the final walkthrough, communication was clear and consistent, and I always felt like a priority. We recently had the pleasure of working with James and Tarrytown Roofing to install a new roof on our family home,.... and the experience was exceptional from start to finish! The professionalism displayed by the entire team was impressive, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. What truly stood out was the personal touch they brought to the project. They took the time to listen to our needs, answer all our questions, and ensure we felt comfortable with every decision. Their transparency was remarkable; there were no hidden costs, and they kept us informed at every stage, so we always knew what to expect. The crew was stellar—punctual, respectful, and highly skilled. They completed the job with precision and care, leaving our property spotless when they were done. Pretty sure they cleaned up after our toddler too :) Watching them work was a joy, as it was clear they took great pride in their craft. Overall, working with Tarrytown Roofing was a fantastic experience, and we couldn’t be happier with our beautiful new roof. We highly recommend them to anyone in need of roofing services!

Frequently asked

Where is Tarrytown Roofing based?
At 1717 West 6th Street, Suite 100, Austin, TX 78703, in Travis County, just east of the Tarrytown neighbourhood the company is named after. That address appears on its own site, its BBB profile and its RCAT record.
How long has the company been in business?
It is new. Its BBB profile records the business as started on 14 August 2024, with accreditation granted in February 2025, and RCAT lists it as a member since 2025. The "50 years of combined experience" line on its site refers to the staff's collective careers, not the company's age. Ask who specifically will run your job and what they have installed before.
Does Texas licence roofing contractors?
No. There is no state roofing licence in Texas, so no Austin roofer is licensed by the state. Verify the certificate of general liability and workers compensation insurance, sent to you directly by the insurer, plus the RCAT record and any City of Austin contractor requirements.
What is this company's RCAT status?
The RCAT data we hold lists Tarrytown Roofing as a Member. Membership means dues are paid to the association. It is separate from RCAT's earned Licensed Roofing Contractor credential, and the two are not interchangeable. Ask which one a contractor holds if it matters to you.
How far does it travel?
Its site states service within sixty miles of downtown Austin and forty miles of Dallas and Fort Worth, with named pages for Austin neighbourhoods, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Leander, Pflugerville, Hutto, Kyle, Buda, San Marcos, Wimberley, Bastrop, plus Bryan and College Station and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Its BBB profile lists a second location in Bryan.
What roofing materials does it install?
Asphalt shingles, metal, slate and wood shake for pitched roofs, and EPDM, TPO and PVC membranes for flat and low slope commercial work. It also lists multi family roofing as a distinct line.
What is SHINGLE Rx?
It is the company's own brand name for its roof repair service, as distinct from full replacement. It is a marketing name, not an industry standard or a manufacturer programme, so ask exactly what the scope, materials and warranty cover before you accept a repair over a replacement.
Are impact resistant shingles worth it in Travis County?
Central Texas takes real hail, though less frequently than the Dallas-Fort Worth corridor. Class 4 impact rated shingles cost more up front and many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for them. Check with your carrier what discount your policy allows before you commit to a shingle line.
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Austin?
Texas has no single statewide building code applied uniformly, so permitting is set locally. The City of Austin, Travis County and each surrounding city run their own rules, and historic or neighbourhood overlays around west Austin can add requirements. Confirm in writing who pulls the permit and who schedules the inspection.
What should I ask before signing a contract?
Ask for the insurance certificate direct from the insurer, a written scope naming shingle or membrane brand, line and colour, the manufacturer warranty and the workmanship warranty stated separately with lengths, a fixed price rather than "whatever insurance pays", and a payment schedule that does not demand full payment before completion. With a company this new, ask for local references from the last twelve months.
