About

Lightning Exteriors is a family owned roofing and exteriors contractor with a Texas office at 18382 FM 306, Suite 101 in Canyon Lake, Comal County. The wider company operates across four states from a headquarters in Valley, Nebraska, with additional markets in Iowa and South Dakota, but the Canyon Lake branch is the Texas operation and works the Hill Country and Interstate 35 corridor including New Braunfels and San Antonio. Its BBB profile records a business start date of April 2021 and BBB Accredited status with an A+ rating since August 2024. Shon Thielen is listed as CEO and Terese Thielen as CFO. The published scope covers residential and commercial roofing, roof repairs and inspections, storm restoration, insurance claims support, residential siding, gutters, attic insulation and permanent outdoor lighting. On materials the company names GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed and IKO products, and specifically calls out the IKO Nordic Cornerstone line as a Class 4 impact resistant shingle along with IKO ArmourShake. That matters in Comal County, which sits inside the hail and severe storm belt that drives most Central Texas roof replacements. On credentials, Lightning Exteriors appears in Owens Corning's own contractor directory as an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, the top tier of that network, and holds BBB accreditation with an A+ rating. It also lists GAF certified roofer status, IKO ROOFPRO Craftsman Premier, LP Building Solutions certified contractor and membership in RCAT and the Central Texas Roofing Contractors Association. Comal County is inland and is not one of the 14 TWIA first tier coastal counties, so WPI-8 windstorm certification does not apply to roofs in Canyon Lake, New Braunfels or San Antonio.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #01-0679 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

We recently had some roof and chimney repairs performed by Lightning Exteriors, and the experience was excellent! Jack is a neighbor and responded to our query on Nextdoor about recommended roofing companies. He is very personable and was quick to assess the entire roof and was able to explain the needed repairs and provide us with a quote for these repairs. All repairs were done in a very timely manner. Jack was always available to answer any questions we had. I believe he and the crew went above and beyond to rectify problems encountered. I highly recommend Jack and Lightning Exteriors for any roofing repairs.

I had an amazing experience with Lighting Exteriors when they replaced my shingles. From start to finish, their team was professional, efficient, and incredibly knowledgeable. They took the time to explain the process, helped me choose the best materials for my home, and made sure everything was done on time and within budget. The crew was punctual, hardworking, and detail-oriented, ensuring a high-quality installation while keeping the worksite clean. I was especially impressed with their customer service and communication—they kept me updated throughout the project and answered all my questions. My roof looks fantastic, and I couldn’t be happier with the results! If you’re looking for a reliable and trustworthy company for exterior work, I highly recommend Lighting Exteriors.

Angel & Vincent did an outstanding job replacing and resetting several of our house, workshop and well house gutters and downspouts. They were on time, courteous and efficient! They cleaned up the job site thoroughly before they left. Sean came out as soon as I contacted him, evaluated our needs and presented us with a fair price quote for the job. He scheduled the job within 3 days of giving us the estimate. The whole process took a total of 4 days start to finished product! I highly recommend Lightning Exteriors to anyone needing work done on their rain gutters and downspouts !!!

Travis did an excellent job and took into account all of my concerns regarding gutter guards and some minor repairs to the corner joints. Minor rain has shown improvement. Next heavy rain can update further. He does other jobs as well. Will definitely consider.

Frequently asked

Is Lightning Exteriors licensed by the State of Texas?
Texas does not issue a state roofing licence, so no Texas roofer holds one. The credentials that are real here are insurance, association standing and manufacturer program status. Lightning Exteriors is BBB Accredited with an A+ rating and appears in Owens Corning's own directory as a Platinum Preferred Contractor. Always ask for current certificates of insurance direct from the insurer or agent.
What is the RCAT status on this listing?
This listing carries a Licensed status, which refers to RCAT's separately earned Licensed Roofing Contractor credential rather than plain association membership. RCAT membership and the RCAT licence credential are two different things and should not be treated as equivalent. Neither is a government licence, because Texas does not issue one.
Does a roof in Canyon Lake or New Braunfels need WPI-8 windstorm certification?
No. WPI-8 applies only in the 14 first tier Gulf Coast counties covered by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. Comal County is inland Hill Country and is not on that list. If a contractor tries to sell you a windstorm certificate for a Canyon Lake roof, that is a warning sign.
What is the real roofing risk in Comal County?
Hail and severe thunderstorm wind. Central Texas sits in the corridor that produces most of the state's hail claims, and most roof replacements here follow a storm rather than simple age. That is why impact resistant shingles and a properly documented post storm inspection matter more here than wind uplift certification.
What are Class 4 impact resistant shingles?
Class 4 is the highest impact rating under UL 2218, tested with a steel ball drop. Lightning Exteriors names the IKO Nordic Cornerstone line as its Class 4 option. Many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof, so ask your carrier what the discount is before deciding, since it varies by company.
What does Owens Corning Platinum Preferred actually mean?
Platinum Preferred is the top tier of the Owens Corning contractor network. Contractors must meet standards for licensing where applicable, insurance, credit and customer satisfaction, and only Platinum Preferred contractors can offer Owens Corning's strongest system warranty. Lightning Exteriors is listed at that tier on Owens Corning's own site, not just on its own marketing.
The company is headquartered in Nebraska. Is the Texas work local?
Lightning Exteriors operates across four states from a Valley, Nebraska headquarters, with a Texas office at 18382 FM 306 in Canyon Lake. It is worth asking who the local project manager is, whether crews are local or travelling, and who you call for a warranty issue in three years. Get those names and numbers in the contract.
Can the company help with a hail insurance claim?
It lists storm restoration and insurance claims support among its services. A roofer can inspect, document damage with dated photos and meet your adjuster on site. Under Texas law a roofing contractor cannot act as your public adjuster or negotiate the claim on your behalf, and it is illegal for a contractor to offer to waive or absorb your deductible.
Who handles the permit for a reroof in Comal County?
Texas has no statewide building code, so it depends on your exact address. Unincorporated Comal County, the City of New Braunfels, the City of San Antonio and Bexar County all handle roofing permits differently. Ask in writing which jurisdiction applies and who is filing, then confirm with that building department yourself.
What should I get in writing before signing?
The full scope including decking replacement pricing, underlayment, flashing, ventilation and debris removal. The exact shingle product, including whether it is the Class 4 option. Both the manufacturer warranty tier and the workmanship warranty in years. Certificates of insurance direct from the insurer. Permit responsibility. A payment schedule that does not require the full amount up front. And your right to cancel.
