About

Ja-Mar Roofing & Sheet Metal is headquartered at 16712 S IH 35 Frontage Rd in Buda, Hays County, just south of Austin. This is the company's corporate home and the anchor of all seven of its RCAT registrations, which share a single company licence number. The Buda site sits on 1.6 acres and combines a roughly 5,000 square foot office with a 3,600 square foot sheet metal shop, so custom flashing, coping, copings and architectural metal are fabricated in house rather than bought in. The company's own history page traces the business to J&J Roofing, founded in New Orleans in 1961 by James McKinney and James Parker. The operation relocated to Austin in 1969, took the Ja-Mar name in 1985, was acquired by David L. Phillips through DL Phillips Construction in 2005, and moved its headquarters to Buda in 2011. Both the company site and the Better Business Bureau date the business itself to 1970. Ja-Mar acquired River City Roofing in 2008 and made the Inc. 5000 list in 2014. Buda and the wider Austin and Hill Country market are inland, so the roofing story here is hail, high wind and heat rather than coastal windstorm certification. The company works across residential and commercial roofing, metal roof construction, historic restoration, multifamily, gutters, solar and roof maintenance programmes.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #03-0309 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

I want to thank Kevin Pruitt for a worry and stress free experience replacing our hail damaged roof. Right from the start, Kevin worked with us to confirm the insurance estimate to ensure we were getting everything due to us. During installation, he inspected the material, replaced some vents that were not up to par and kept me informed of the progress. The roof was installed in one day and came out beautiful! Additionally, we have a sunroom that ties into the shingled roof, which was also damaged. Having sheet metal experience, Kevin's solution took special care to ensure there would prevent future leaks at the tie in. Kevin personally installed the metal roof repair. It was tested 2 hours later when we got a decent rain in Cedar Park. I've already provided a couple of neighbors with his contact info that stopped and was impressed by the work and just as importantly, the cleanup. Oh! I've got a "cable cutter" antenna on the roof. Kevin helped me customize a leak free vent to feed the antenna cable from the attic to the roof. He also assisted me in reinstalling the antenna. Working like a charm! Above and beyond service!

My wife and I are extremely happy with our new roof from Ja-Mar Roofing. Ken came out to look at our old roof and prepared the estimate. He was very thorough in explaining the process, and made me feel confident with the choices that I made. Ja-Mar has been in business for over 50 years, and has earned top certifications from their suppliers which allows them to offer the best warranties in the industry. Once the work started, the whole process went very smoothly. We only had a delay of one day, and I blame myself for that because I changed the color of the shingles. I travel a lot during the week, so I wasn’t there when the work was being done, but my wife was. Ken and Nikki stayed in contact with me the whole time, so there was no surprises or wondering what was going on. When the work was complete, they left the whole area around the house cleaner than it was when they got there. I cannot recommend Ja-Mar Roofing enough. Give them a try for your next roofing project. You won’t be sorry.

We had a great experience with Ja-Mar roofing when the metal roof blew off our large shop building. The rep who responded, Jeff Huggins, treated this project like it was his own home. Communication was excellent throughout the entire process. Jeff went above and beyond while we were waiting for the new roof to be put on. He made extra visits to personally help prevent additional water from getting into the building when we were expecting rain. The new roof looks great and is more water tight than ever now. Would immediately call Jeff again if we ever have another roofing issue.

I can honestly say that Ja Mar roofing goes way beyond what I would call an incredible roofing company. It's not just the quality of their work but they're incredible reliability many years after the work has been performed. 9 years after the initial roof install they were kind enough to work with my insurance company to to help me negotiate a more reasonable rate due to the quality of the roof that they put in. If I could give them six stars I would.

Although I did not end up using Ja Mar roofing for my commercial job, I am confident in their business and their professionalism. I worked with Jeff Huggins for my sales rep and his service was top-notch. His quote was competitive and he was able to navigate all of the intricacies of my project flawlessly. My ultimate decision to use another company was mostly political and completely out of their control. I would gladly work with them on any roofing project in the future. Thank you Jeff!!

Frequently asked

Is Ja-Mar Roofing licensed by the State of Texas?
No, because Texas does not issue a state roofing licence. There is no state roofing licensing board, so no Texas roofer can be state licensed and any claim otherwise should be treated as a warning sign. Ja-Mar holds the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas Licensed Roofing Contractor credential, which is a voluntary industry credential. Current general liability and workers compensation insurance is the check that matters most.
What is the difference between an RCAT Member and an RCAT Licensed Roofing Contractor?
They are two different things. RCAT Membership means a company pays dues to the association. The Licensed Roofing Contractor credential is earned separately through testing and continuing education requirements. Ja-Mar carries the Licensed status in the RCAT directory. Ask any contractor which of the two they hold rather than accepting a vague claim of RCAT affiliation.
Is the Buda location the company's headquarters?
Yes. Ja-Mar's corporate office is at 16712 S IH 35 Frontage Rd in Buda, Hays County, and the Better Business Bureau lists that address as the headquarters. The company's history page records the move to Buda in 2011. The Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Odessa and Pharr entries in the RCAT directory are all registrations of this same company under one shared company licence number.
Does Ja-Mar make its own sheet metal?
Yes. The Buda headquarters includes a sheet metal shop of roughly 3,600 square feet next to the office on the 1.6 acre site. That matters for custom flashing, copings, chimney and wall details, and standing seam panel work, because a roofer with an in house shop can fabricate to the actual measured condition rather than forcing a stock part to fit.
Are Class 4 impact resistant shingles worth it around Austin?
Central Texas sits on the southern edge of the hail belt and takes damaging hail regularly, so a Class 4 impact rated shingle is a reasonable upgrade. Class 4 is the highest rating in the UL 2218 steel ball impact test. Many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof, but the amount varies widely by carrier. Ask your agent to quote the actual discount before you decide.
Do I need WPI-8 windstorm certification in Buda?
No. WPI-8 certificates of compliance apply only in the 14 first tier Texas coastal counties covered by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. Hays County is inland Central Texas and is not one of them. Hail resistance, wind uplift rating on the shingle and correct fastening are the relevant performance questions here, not coastal windstorm certification.
How do I verify a roofer's insurance before work starts?
Ask for a certificate of insurance sent to you directly by the insurance agency rather than forwarded by the contractor. It should list general liability and workers compensation, name the agency and the policy numbers, and show current dates. Call the agency and confirm the policy is live. Given that Texas has no state roofing licence, this is the single most useful check a homeowner can make.
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Buda or Austin?
Texas has no statewide building code enforcement, so each city and county sets its own rules. Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, Austin and unincorporated Hays County all handle permitting separately, and requirements for reroofs differ between them. Ask your contractor in writing who pulls the permit and what inspections are required. Treat a claim that no permit is needed with suspicion.
What is the difference between a manufacturer warranty and a workmanship warranty?
The manufacturer warranty covers the materials and is issued by the shingle maker. The workmanship warranty covers the installation and is issued by the roofer, so it is only as good as the company still being in business. Enhanced manufacturer warranties, such as the GAF Golden Pledge, can wrap workmanship into the manufacturer backed coverage, but they require a certified installer and specific system components. Ask which tier you are actually getting in writing.
What should I ask before signing a roofing contract in Texas?
Get the full scope in writing, including deck repair pricing, underlayment type, fastening pattern, ventilation, flashing details and cleanup. Ask who supervises on site and whether crews are employees or subcontractors. Confirm the warranty tiers and their lengths. Confirm insurance and permit responsibility. Never pay in full up front, and read any clause that assigns your insurance claim rights to the contractor before you sign it.
