About

Lon Smith Roofing is a Dallas Fort Worth roofing company founded in Fort Worth in 1974. This record is the company's eastern, Dallas County office. RCAT lists it at 3731 Cavalier Drive, Garland, TX 75042 on (214) 221-1400. The company's own website publishes that same (214) 221-1400 line against 10821 Sanden Drive, Dallas, TX 75238, and the Dallas BBB profile uses the Sanden Drive address, so the office appears to have moved a short distance within Dallas County while the Garland address remains on some directory records. The work is the North Texas standard: residential roof replacement and repair, new roof installation, commercial roofing, hail and storm damage inspection, and help documenting insurance claims, plus attic ventilation and energy or insulation evaluation. The company's About page names GAF, CertainTeed, TAMKO, Malarkey, IKO, Atlas, Decra, Boral and DaVinci as product partners, and the company is listed in both the GAF and the Owens Corning contractor directories. This office holds its own BBB business profile (Lon Smith Roofing and Construction, Dallas), accredited since 1992 with an A+ rating. The Fort Worth office holds a separate BBB profile of its own, and the Dallas profile names Fort Worth as the company headquarters.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #03-0358 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

I’m not in the habit of writing reviews but my wife and I had such a pleasant experience having our roof replaced from the spring hail storms that we wanted to spread the word. The Lon Smith crew installed our roof in one day. What was just as impressive to us was the cleanup and followup. Lon Smith inspectors followed up twice to make sure the job was completed and adhered to their quality standards. Lon Smiths Philip Stanford recommended installing impact resistant shingles, which we did, and will withstand damage from future hail storms and lower our insurance premiums. Philip even met and went up on the roof with the insurance adjuster for the initial inspection. We are recommending Lon Smith to all of our neighbors. Bill and Lissa Smith

The team at Lon Smith Roofing was incredibly professional and responsive from the initial sales process through the roof installation completion. Shannon, the person that did the estimate explained the pros and cons of the different classes of shingles what the replacement included beyond just the shingles. She also walked me though what to expect during the installation. I chose to go with the Class 4 shingles, given the nature of weather in North Texas and the shingles ratings on wind and hail. Andrew, the crew lead walked me though the installation process and kept me up to date on the status once the team started. The roofers arrived on time and did a fantastic job. They also cleaned up thoroughly after themselves. There was no mess left behind, which I greatly appreciated. I couldn't be happier with the results and would highly recommend Lon Smith.

After a recent storm we contacted Lon Smith Roofing to assess roof damage. Mike McCoy from the company confirmed storm damage and assisted us in filing an insurance claim. The insurance company and agent were less than helpful. Mike McCoy helped us navigate the very complicated insurance process and after 2 denials we were approved. My advice to anyone with roof damage is to contact a reputable Roofing company to guide you through the process. Without the tireless assistance of Lon Smith Roofing and Mike McCoy we would not have a new roof and gutters today. Kudos to the roof and gutter crew. Their work was excellent and the after work cleanup meticulous.

Over all they did a good job except for a few boo boos. We had a leak which was do to the wrong vent being installed over our garage. They did come out and change it. We have a dryer vent that continually stopped up do to the wrong vent being installed on roof . Wanted to charge us $400 for their mistake. The problem is there is no way to clean the vent out without taking the duct work out from inside the attic and trying to clean the vent out from the bottom side. You would have to be there to understand the frustration with the process. Even sent pictures of the original vent vs. what they installed. It's sad that such an easy fix can give you a different opinion of a company. Granted this roof was replaced in 2015 due to hail and again in 2016 due to tornado but the frustration has just built up over the years.

Matt Peterson did an awesome job convincing my insurance company that I had storm (wind and hail) damage. The inspection he did was very thorough and provided me with a new roof, new roof vents, and many other repairs. The roof he suggested we install is also hail resistant which is a great feature for me. Since I had never had to have a new roof in any other place I had lived I really appreciated Matt’s expertise in helping me make decisions. When the day of the actual roof repair came I was impressed with the professionalism of the workers and the care they took with my property. I am very pleased with the job they performed on my roof replacement. The cleanup was very well managed also. All in all I couldn’t have been more pleased with the job that was done from beginning to end. Thank you Matt Peterson and thank you Lon Smith Roofing!

Frequently asked

Does Texas issue a state roofing license?
No. Texas has no state roofing license, so no roofing company in Texas can honestly claim to be state licensed. What you can check instead is current general liability and workers compensation insurance, status with the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT), and any registration your own city requires.
What does the RCAT Member status on this listing mean?
It means the company is a dues paying member of the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas. That is not the same thing as RCAT's separately earned Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL), which involves testing and continuing education. This listing shows Member.
Is this the same business as the Lon Smith Roofing listing in Fort Worth?
Yes, it is the same company. Lon Smith Roofing runs two Dallas Fort Worth offices, and each is registered with RCAT separately because each has its own street address, its own local phone line and its own BBB profile. Fort Worth is the headquarters. This record is the Dallas County office.
Where exactly is this office and which number should I call?
RCAT lists 3731 Cavalier Drive, Garland, TX 75042 with the phone number (214) 221-1400. The company's own contact page publishes that same (214) 221-1400 line against 10821 Sanden Drive, Dallas, TX 75238. Call first and confirm the address before driving out.
Are Class 4 impact resistant shingles worth it in Dallas County?
Dallas County sits in the part of North Texas that takes the most hail in the state, so a Class 4 impact rated shingle is a common upgrade here. Many Texas carriers offer a premium credit for one, but the size of that credit varies by insurer, so ask your own carrier what it will actually pay back before you decide.
How does a hail damage claim normally work in North Texas?
A roofer inspects and documents the hail bruising, you open a claim, and your insurer sends an adjuster who writes a scope and a value. Policies pay either actual cash value or replacement cost, and you owe your deductible either way. In Texas it is illegal for a contractor to pay, absorb or rebate your insurance deductible, so treat any offer to do so as a warning sign.
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Garland or Dallas?
Texas has no single statewide building code enforcement for this, so permitting and inspection are handled city by city. Garland and Dallas each run their own process. Ask in writing who pulls the permit and who meets the inspector, and make sure it is the contractor and not you.
What should I ask a Texas roofer before I sign anything?
Ask for a certificate of insurance sent directly from the insurer or agent rather than a photocopy, a written scope naming the exact shingle brand and product line, a clear split between the manufacturer's material warranty and the contractor's workmanship warranty, the payment schedule, and who pulls the permit. Do not sign anything that ties you to a contractor before your claim is settled unless you understand the cancellation terms.
Does Lon Smith Roofing handle commercial buildings as well as houses?
Yes. The company's website lists commercial roofing alongside its residential work, and its RCAT record classifies it as a Residential and Commercial contractor.
How can I check the manufacturer certifications a roofer claims?
Look the company up on the manufacturer's own contractor directory at gaf.com, owenscorning.com or certainteed.com rather than trusting a logo on a website. Lon Smith Roofing does appear in the GAF and Owens Corning directories. The higher tier labels the company states for itself, GAF Master Elite and CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster, were not visible on the manufacturer pages that could be read for this listing.
