About

Big State Roofing & Restoration is a roofing contractor working out of 31 Oak Bend Drive in Huntsville, Walker County. The Better Business Bureau records the business start date as November 2008, lists Kenny Tullos as managing member, and has accredited the company with an A+ rating since April 2016. The company's own website sets out six core services: roof inspections, roof replacement, roof repair, storm damage work, shingle roofing and gutter services. Its published service area runs down the I-45 corridor from Huntsville through Willis, Conroe, Montgomery and The Woodlands, so the same crew that works Walker County also works north Montgomery County. Huntsville sits well inland, so the roofing story here is hail, thunderstorm outflow wind and long summer heat. Big State does not publish a GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed certification tier on its site, so homeowners who want a manufacturer backed system warranty should ask directly which shingle line and which certification a quote is written against, and should ask for current general liability and workers compensation certificates before signing.

Insurance & credential verification

Texas does not issue a state roofing license, so we verify companies the way homeowners actually can: confirming insurance coverage, checking RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) status, and checking city or county registration where the local jurisdiction requires one. Every credential below links to the actual issuing organization's own public lookup — don't just take our checkmark for it. Always ask for a current certificate of insurance before signing any contract.

Confirm this licence yourself at web.rcat.net/rcat/search — search #01-0410 or the company name.

Confirm this yourself: ask the company for their certificate of insurance (COI). Note that RCAT's Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned and held by a named individual at a company, not by the business itself, which is why we name that person above where we know it; Texas issues no company roofing license at all. RCAT and NTRCA status can be checked in their own public directories (RCAT, NTRCA) — use the "Licensed"/"Accredited" filter to see more than plain membership. GAF's contractor verification tool and Owens Corning's Texas locator confirm those tiers directly; CertainTeed doesn't offer a comparable self-serve lookup, so ask to see that certificate in person. BBB accreditation and rating are on bbb.org. Houston's own published registered-roofer list is years out of date, so it isn't cited here at all — confirm registration by contacting the city directly. Corpus Christi's STAR program has its own online contractor registry — for any other city or county registration claim, confirm directly with that jurisdiction's permit office.

I can’t say enough good things about Big State Roofing. Ken and his crew were very responsive and helpful and the price was very reasonable. The job was a remodel with metal roof and they made it look fantastic. The tie in and flashing work were second to none. It’s a perfect match to the original roof. I would strongly recommend them to any friend or family member!! Thanks Big State.

I had some problems with my siding that I needed to be fixed. I was actually unsure who to call, as searching for siding repair, I kept getting roofers. One roofer that came up was Big State Roofing. I checked their reviews on Google, Yelp, Angie's etc., which will all good, and saw they were also BBB accredited. I contacted Ken, he came out, and talked straight with me about the simplest way to address my problem that saved me a lot of money. I was quite impressed. I have no doubt that if I have future issues with my siding, or my roof, I will be contacting him. It is nice to know that good people running businesses still exist in this world.

UPDATE: The only thing Big State did well or quickly was the assessment and quote. They under quoted the cost of repairs and strung me along for WEEKS, putting off the repairs with excuse after excuse, hoping I would cancel the contract. Their constant delays put the sale of my house in jeopardy. With three days until I was supposed to close on my house and ZERO repairs done, I finally did cancel, and I found a different roofer who did the work in 2 days. Very responsive and fast! Showed up within 20 minutes of my initial call and had a very fair quote after assessing the storm damage to my roof.

Had 2 roof leaks with damaged decking. They repaired leaks with new wood decking, and installed 2 solar roof vents which made my home more comfortable by reducing hot air from the attic. Great job.

When we first learned that our home would need a completely new roof following a hail storm, we were very overwhelmed with trying to understand the insurance adjusters assessment of the damage. Ken was extremely helpful in reviewing the claim with us, section by section, to help us understand what our options were. We shopped around and received 10 estimates from different roofing companies in Bryan/College Station and absolutely no one even got close to the quote that Ken and his team gave us. After receiving not so good news that insurance was not able to give us very much, Ken gave us the best possible price for such a high quality roof. His team finished the roof in less than a day and we are very happy with the results! I highly recommend Ken at Big State Roofing. We had an exceptional and stress free experience.

Frequently asked

Does Texas issue a state roofing licence?
No. Texas has no statewide roofing contractor license, so no roofer in Huntsville or anywhere else in Texas can truthfully be called state licensed for roofing. The checks that actually matter are current general liability and workers compensation insurance, standing with the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT), and whatever registration your city requires.
What does the RCAT status shown on this listing mean?
RCAT has two separate things that are often confused. Plain membership means a company pays dues and belongs to the association. The Licensed Roofing Contractor credential (CRRL, RRL or CRL) is earned separately through experience and testing. Big State Roofing & Restoration is shown here with the RCAT Licensed Roofing Contractor credential, which is the harder of the two to obtain.
Is Big State Roofing & Restoration insured?
Ask for the paperwork and read it yourself. Request a certificate of general liability insurance and a certificate of workers compensation, both current, both naming the contracting entity, and ideally both emailed straight from the insurance agent rather than forwarded by a salesperson. Insurance is verified separately from this listing and is not something a directory badge should replace.
What roof damage is most common around Huntsville?
Hail, straight line wind off thunderstorm outflow, and heat. Repeated hail bruises asphalt shingle mats, wind lifts and creases tabs along ridges and rakes, and sustained summer heat ages sealant strips and accelerates granule loss.
Are Class 4 impact resistant shingles worth it in Walker County?
They are worth pricing. Class 4 shingles pass a steel ball impact test and hold up better to moderate hail, and many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for them. Ask your own insurer what discount they give and for how long, then ask the roofer for the price difference between the standard architectural shingle and the Class 4 version of the same line.
Do I need a permit to re roof a house in Huntsville?
Texas has no single statewide residential building code enforcement, so permits and inspections are set city by city and county by county. Check with the City of Huntsville building department, or your county if you are outside city limits, and get it in writing in the contract that the roofer pulls the permit rather than you.
Which cities does the company serve?
Its website lists Huntsville, Conroe, Montgomery, The Woodlands and Willis. If your address is outside those, ask before scheduling, because travel distance often affects both pricing and how quickly a crew can return for warranty work.
What manufacturer certifications does Big State hold?
None are published on the company website. The verified credential we can point to is BBB accreditation with an A+ rating, held since April 2016. If an extended manufacturer system warranty matters to you, ask which manufacturer certification the quoted roof relies on, because the strongest warranties are only available through certified installers.
How long should a new roof last in this part of Texas?
Manufacturer ratings do not survive contact with Texas hail and heat, so treat published lifespans as a ceiling rather than an expectation. A more useful question is which specific shingle line is being installed, what the manufacturer warranty actually covers, whether it is prorated, and how many years of workmanship warranty the roofing company itself carries.
What should I pin down before signing a roofing contract?
Get the scope in writing: tear off versus overlay, the per sheet price for replacing rotten decking, the underlayment, ventilation, and all flashing and pipe boots. Then get the total price, the payment schedule, the workmanship warranty term, and the insurance certificates. Be wary of any agreement that only becomes binding once your insurer approves a claim, and never pay the balance before the work is finished and looked over.
